Living in a different state than you based out of?

I am currently in Iowa and have been approved to have my CDL training paid for at a school up here. It will cost me nothing, I have done my research, and it is a great school. However, after graduating I want to move back home. I have family in East Tennessee and family in Charlotte. I would like to split time when I am not OTR living with both of them. The companies I want to work for are in Charlotte, but I want my official residence to be in Tennessee.

So how would I go about making this happen? Would I need to retake a simple CDL test when I finish here an get down to TN? Would companies in Charlotte hire me if I'm living in TN? Would I need to get a NC and TN CDL on top of my Iowa CDL? If so how much would this cost and what would I have to do?

 

You will just need a Tennessee cdl. When you move to Tennessee go to the DMV and change your Iowa cdl to a Tennessee cdl. You can still work for North Carolina based companies with a Tennessee cdl.

Thank you bro. Massive help. I'm not sure which one yet. I just noticed that Charlotte has a ton of truck company hubs there, way more than East TN. I'm not interested in being based out of anywhere else in NC. I'm from Charlotte, I have family there. Ive been looking into Knight and Schneider alot.

Another question, do you know if Charlotte is a good place to be an OTR driver? I want alot of miles like everyone else. I assume I would do alot of runs to the northeast, but is it a decent spot to be based at doing OTR?

 

East Tennessee or Charlotte are excellent and good companies hire drivers from both areas.
Check these that hire from both:
Abilene Motor Express
Freymiller
Magnum Ltd.
Tyson Foods
All the above hire new cdl grads. If a website has "experience required" then it's not up to date.

I think Abilene trucks run the fastest @68mph.

 

There's an Iowa based company named Schuster that hires new cdl grads. Ask them if East Tennessee is in their hiring area. Check their website.

Tell your classmates to check out Schuster and Don Hummer Trucking plus the others on the list I gave you. Some of these real good companies you won't hear about in cdl school.

 

I would check with Tennessee DMV... Some states like here in Illinois you can't just switch an out of state CDL... You have to do every test written, driving, backing, and pretrip all over again
