That Uniden is a pretty sought after radio, I'd see if you can get an estimate on what it would take to fix it, it might be something really simple. Mounting the antenna on the roof would be my #1 choice if the height isn't much of an issue.

I think I'm Gunna fix the Uniden. There's a local shop but I'm not sure about him. He came recommended. I asked him if he was goin to cut the modulation limiter and his response was "I don't cut it, I modify it to end up with about 10% clipping". Can anybody tell me what that might mean? As for the antenna I think I will try the whip on a ball mount. What kind of end does my coax need to work with a ball mount?

On a ball mount you are going to need it to be open end... Thats the reason there are screws on the center of it.... This would be for the hot side (Center and insulated) Take the braided side (Ground) and place it on one of the three screws that holds the ball mount on the truck.

FYI the reason the philly made uniden/cobras are high in demand is due to the few people that run high power in the mobiles. These units tend to have less problems than the newer units that are made today.... Guess the old adage of they don't make them like they used to comes into effect here.
