Oh yeah that is one I agree with my work was 22 miles each way and I don't own any car under a v8. And traffic after work was always nuts. Gas prices sucked too. I could, have took all that gas money to otr and bought like 11 and a half lot lizards

You know it's funny right now my work is actually fairly close to my house, it's not a bad drive at all 15 minutes mostly highway. However when I worked at the beer company that wasn't the case oh no it wasn't I had a good drive from my house to the warehouse and I got to sit in traffic and all that fun stuff. Now a days it's not so bad because I'm lucky the yard is close to my house. However I know some guys have a 70 mile commute from the terminal to there home.

Yeah it's defiantly a grind. I'm lucky I guess as long as the warehouse is on time my days are I get up 3:15am Monday-Wednesday then I get up 2:15am Thursday and 3:15am on Friday. Usually back at the yard 2-3 O'Clockish.

Hey, I hear that. My last job was 9 miles from home, six of them on a 55 MPH highway!
I can't see doing that long commute. It is time to either find a new job, or a new home! And if both of those are bad choices, then maybe you could rent a room in a boarding house, at least a few nights/days a week.

I love being local, paid for all my time with OT and same start time every day.
The huge benefit I think my company has is we work 4 on and 3 off so you get to see the family, but if you need extra days they are always available. Can I say that I don't miss OTR at all? No, but I have a little family now and it just works out being home.

The key to LTL (or any other local delivery gig for that matter) is to build your seniority in order to bid on a start time and a route. Once you get that, it's pretty much a gravytrain.

I've been at my current outfit for 5 years now and I start at 0900 everyday M-F. I drive an assigned 2014 Volvo daycab and I know the roads and customers on my route like the back of my hand. I work about 50 hrs per week at $24.50/hr with overtime after 45 hours.

There's options for weekend work if I want to make some extra $$$, they have a signup sheet in the dispatch office but I like having my weekends. Yes, weekends...as in off Friday by about 1800 and don't see hide nor hair of the terminal until 0900 on Monday morning. No more 34 hour resets at home or in a truckstop.

The work is physical, but you're paid for every minute you're on the job. Pre-trip/fuel the truck? Paid. Stuck in 5 o'clock rush-hour traffic? Paid. Breakdown? Paid. Bad weather? Paid. Tied-up at a customer? Paid. And none of those "after 2-3 hours" freebies either.

I'm not saying this work is suited for everyone, but $63k and home every night and off every weekend with good benefits running 100% legal just can't be beat. And there's guys pulling doubles at night making anywhere from $70k-100K.

Hello Hotplate, and WELCOME to the forum!
Yes, LTL isn't for everyone. And of course it is different with different companies, and mostly with different locations.
My job here in SW Utah would be a whole lot different than a corresponding job in say Phillie. And yet some things are the same. Mainly the physical part.
I went from regional to LTL and really loved the LTL. (Didn't mind the regional, actually, but KNIGHT never was able to get their shirt together. . .) But that's another story.
Went through some kind of rough times in LTL, with business going up and down like a yo-yo. But I never got less than 45-50 hours a week, unless I was out with injury or something.
Anyway, I enjoyed it until I finally retired.
