I have been in contact with over a dozen companies at this point and so far it’s really down to Schneider or Amhof.
With my military retirement and some other income we could skip going back to work altogether. The reason we’re going to work is to fund some big dreams. That being said, our happiness in this endeavor is more important than the highest paying job. Most companies want to split us up during training and then have us out for weeks of a time on the road.
Snyder will keep us together during inexperienced, driver, training, and orientation. Then we will be on a dedicated Toro route. That is usually five days on and two days off. The money is not as good as some of the other options like covenant or FFE however there are some other perks for veterans like using the G.I. Bill for a year as an apprentice which will give me an additional $1400 a month
Amhof is a local company with 75 trucks but we will be their only team so right now I’m not sure what our schedule would look like however, they do have the greatest flexibility. Their new driver orientation is four weeks home every night. They get rave reviews from their drivers to include a relative of mine who’s worked for them for over 14 years. Again, not the highest pay, but they have other attributes that make them attractive for our situation. We really need to sit down with them and find out what their plan for a team would be.
I’m still open to investigating other companies if you have recommendations. I really appreciate how helpful everyone on the forum has been. -

Doesn’t one of the megas have a training program where student and trainer end their shift back at the terminal everyday? Reason I mention training separately for first 6 months is a lot more doors open if you both have 6 months experience. I have heard of companies putting 3 people in a truck, so I guess thats an option too. Or another option might be for you to get 6 months experience become a trainer and then you train your wife.
Just tossing out ideas. Others may have mentioned these already. Im sure you can find what you’re looking for and you’re in the right place to find what suits you. Keep looking and you’ll find it. -
cliff notes version- initial money (first year) isn’t the priority, after 20 yrs in the military staying together is the priority. Schneider and Amhof will keep us together and we will both get the experience.
after a year we will seek out the top money team jobs.MSWS, Seth0194 and 4wayflashers Thank this. -
Have you looked into which accounts schneider might have in your area? I know some normal solo driver accounts will have a few team drivers so they can make the turn around on some of the more distant stores. Kind of like a super solo where the second driver picks up the miles a solo would be unable to do before clock runs out. The dollar stores are not really recommended too often but if you’re in shape and have a second driver you can make bank. The dollar stores have been getting busy too with the economy slowing down.
Just some thoughts lol. Im sure you’ll do fine whatever you decide. -
we are applying for the Toro dedicated account. 5000k miles per week. 5 on 2 off. Generally runs from Minnesota to the Southeast and back.JoeTruck, Opus and 4wayflashers Thank this. -
