MAY company layton UT I FAILED MY ROAD TEST?

HUH... might have to call them up, just so I can see if I pass or fail....lol.

Be like a challenge to all drivers.

 

How long does it take to get used to a shifting pattern?
I would have failed you on that statement alone.
Also consider this would be your 3rd company in 6 months.
As a company I would be of the opinion that this is not worth our time.

 

It took me about 5 min to learn it down shifting was a little tougher but go it down quick too.
All it is you split all of the high range gears.

The same tester failed me too.

Was it my fault of course it was I was pulling out of the Layton yard grabbing gears then I grabbed a gear on the railroad tracks ooooppppsss I caught myself after it was too late.

We got back to the yard he had me do the backing test I thought great maybe he did not catch me grabbing that gear.

Well we got to his office trailer he said well you failed I said ah the railroad track shift right he said yep. I explained to him I caught myself too late then he said well atleast you know why I had to fail you I said yes not your fault I messed up.

I was mad but it was at myself for not doing it right.

I went into the office and told my trainer that I was probaly going home because I failed my test. He talked to the tester and then called his boss and got me one more shot.

 

Testers are checking for driving ability mostly. But on a newly trained driver a willingness to learn and a positive attitude are just as important. If a driver came to me to be checked out and messed up, but took it as a learning experience, and understood what he did wrong, I would consider allowing more training. Or in some situations, a second chance.
Attitude works wonders in that situation.
If in that same test though, the driver presents himself as a well qualified, experienced driver, I would test them as such. Ask them on our return how they felt they did, then give my observations. Depending on there answers and observations, they may pass even with a less than stellar proformance. As long as the issues were not safety related.

 

It sounds like it was a driver problem. Failing a road test is not a co's fault. You may not have remembered shifting over a track, but did you??? Struggling with shifting and a few other errors is enough not to pass. Asking to go into a training progarm does not look well when you are seeking a 1st seat job. My co will fail a driver if you are not going 10 mph below the posted speed limit on a off ramp for the road test.

 

If you come across in person like you do on here I would have failed you ,too.Whatever "problems" you had with the equipment or tester were yours.Six months is not long enough for you to know what you think you know.
My advice to you would be to calm down,settle in to a job,try to accept that you can`t know it all in six months and prepare yourself for a real education that no school can give you.
Not trying to antagonize you,just hoping you will realize you are a rookie and will learn more if you`ll quit blaming everyone else for what you don`t know yet.

One thing to point out here.. well, two.

Less than a year experience, you are a newbie.

Experienced drivers who pass the road test and orientation go right to a truck.

Newbies -if they pass- go to a trainer. If you do NOT pass the road test... there is no "remedial driving 101". At May you are expected to be able to operate your vehicle in a safe and sane manner - or you don't get hired.

Grinding/missing/barking gears is *expected* from a newbie. Trouble shifting is expected.

Shifting while crossing a railroad- automatic failure.
Speeding- automatic failure
Anything else that puts somebody in imminent danger (cutting off other drivers, etc) automatic failure.

If I'm the testor, crappy attitude- probable failure. Crappy attitude in my presence seems to me to be likely to show in the presence of a customer. Not acceptable.

I did my testing elsewhere, but it seems at least possible that there may have been a specific reason the testor wanted to be in the hammer lane (I'm assuming that's what's meant by "left lane". I-15 in Layton is something like 8 lanes. If talking the surface streets, it may have been in preparation for an upcoming turn or other lane modification.)

Finally - I need to check with the recruiter,but it seems to me that somebody may have dropped the ball. I *think* the two other companies in 6 months is one of the "App Killers" - somebody with that record shouldn't even have been invited to test.

Any company concerned with fuel economy will have 13 speeds. And yes some of the majors do have them.

The 10 speeds and auto shifts belong to rookey recruiting driver mills. Some O/O use them, but many of them buy used to reduce cost. So they take the best value.

A 13 speed is NOT complicated. If you can drive a 10, you can drive a 13.

Now...I do agree that maybe May went a bit overboard with some of the "textbook" testing. But I think you brought that on yourself. The tester saw a potential "future" issue with you, and failed you to prevent that.

When you own your own truck, you set the test standards. When you drive someone else truck...they set the standard. Bottom line, cooperate or stay home.

 

Well looks like Chargingbear has given up on his own thread here, nobody giving him sympathy. Instead they been giving advise and what he doing wrong. In other words being helpful. Just hope he takes to these helpful words we given, as it should and learn from it.

 

I drove for May for a year and found their equipment to be fine, if you learn to drive the 13 speed which is similar to an 18 speed you will enjoy it quite a bit. I find 13's and 18's far better for climbing a hill and hate 9 and 10 speed transmissions. As for the guy who does the testing there, I believe he is the same guy called Mike, if it is in Layton UT. He didn't seem to hard maybe he was having a bad day.
But be happy you failed your test since i hear their trucks are doing 61mph and when you get better than 7.2 mpg they let you go 63.
