That was with a used generator? New diesel ape can be had for 8500 installed, the cost can be easily justified, just a longer break even point, but the long life of the diesel engine, it may be no more long term cost over say a 7 year period.

I have about that much in mine with everything new. I've have mine done over a year ago and it has paid for it self several times over in fuel savings.

$3500 vs $8500 is a pretty substantial difference when compared to a diesel APU. Not to mention the obnoxious noise and vibrations from a diesel APU.

And your theory of long trouble free life can be argued indefinitely, because I can bring up case after case where new and used diesel APU's failed or need expensive repairs done within 1 - 2 yrs time. For what it costs to repair a diesel APU,.. I can replace and buy a new generator. Not that I would,.. as Honda is very reliable, I have a 3 yr warranty with mine and they have a very large service network that dare I say,. surpasses any of the diesel APU's out there.

The main inconvenience for me is having to refill the cans. A small price that I am willing to make a concession for. There is also the option of adding a larger tank to decrease the frequency of filling it. I fill my cans roughly twice a week. Its really not that big a deal. Diesel APU's can not even come close to the quietness and smoothness of the EU3000is. Once you own one and use it on a regular basis,.. you really enjoy it. I've actually moved my truck to get away from people with loud diesel APU's,.. may as well be parked next to a reefer unit on start/stop mode.

I'm always amused when other drivers tell me how I should have spent my money ;-)

Besides that, I'd have a hard time taking off a diesel apu from truck everytime I wanted to go camping or tailgating and needed a generator LOL.

Here are some pics of my setup.
My volvo 780 had a spot on passenger side perfect for the generator. I added a cable lock to it and strapped it in. I ran the exhaust out the back and installed a fuel pump (see pics)

I added an 8 ft exhaust pipe like the above one pictured to pipe the exhaust away from the cab.

Installed a c02 monitor and it stayed at 0 ppm for so long I took it outside to make sure it was working and sure enough, it recorded the co2 and setoff the alarm.

It will run approx 70 hours on the tank and will run the a/c in econ idle mode.

    Very pleased with this setup. 20160615_150400.jpg 20160615_150426.jpg 20160615_150447.jpg 20160615_150533.jpg 20160615_150550.jpg 20160615_150632.jpg

Those are good generators. I have a 6500is (not on my truck) that has over 4,000 trouble free hours with nothing but oil changes.

The EU3000 and variants have been around FOREVER. A contractor acquaintance of mine growing up still uses his Honda generator 20+ years later. Hasn't even put rings in it. Just changes oil monthly. I think he had to change brushes in the generator section, or something similar, but that's it.

If it were my rig, I think I'd pipe the exhaust up into the wind. I'm concerned about carbon monoxide, and not just for my safety but the poor sap sleeping next to me with his windows open.
