Your best bet for help with getting started with the authority etc. would be OOIDA. They can do your paper work and help you get set up and make sure you have all your bases covered.
Also NASTC offers a new entrant survival training course. Might be worth checking into. I believe it's a one day deal they have once a month on a Friday.
