I remember reading somewhere the average lifespan for a driver is 62. Of course, some go sooner and some go later. Consider stress, eating habits, lack of exercise, minimal sleep etc.

I'd give it a shot. I have seen drivers out there who are 70 and can drive better than the young people around my age. Age isnt an issue as long as he can meet the requirements for the job position.

Applebrown, you're so right and we've been talking about that for days.

Well, my post about him staying in school is short lived.
We have continued to talk and we wrote down the pro's and con's
of him staying in school and another paper the pro's and con's of going to work driving. The con's totally out weighed the pro's of staying in school
right now. And the pro's of driving out weigh the con's.

The only thing I worry about is being in debt and committed to a company for a year. I know it would be worth it in the end but I hate us going more into debt and being committed to a company (no matter which company)

He has a DOT phys card from 18 months ago when he drove for FedX
as a holiday temp. He went to DMV to get a book to study for his permit
which he plans on getting a head and getting on his own.
(Can you tell he is a self starter?)

If we can find a private owner who would take him on and train him
verses us being in debt and committed we're going to try and go that route. Someone we sort of know, knows of a driver with his own rig,
we're hoping maybe he will allow my husband to go with him and learn.
Not sure if this would be a good way to go.
The man we hear is just like my husband, non smoker, non drinker, Christian so it sounds like if the man will go for it, it would be a good fit.

But if need be he can try Central Refrig or Swift, we have read good and bad about each and I believe with my husbands hard working attitude and friendly and cooperative demeanor he would do good.
He is not lazy nor will he argue and fuss over a route. He just wants to work and be happy.

As to health issues, we already figure on a cooler, sandwiches, veggies, fruits and yogurts :)
And the promise of a 20 min walk a day. We really want to keep him healthy.

    applebrown78 Thanks this.

With an Honorable Discharge from the military if he stays with Central for a year the school is free. I do not think they even take money out of his check.
You would have to ask a recruiter though. This is a program I heard about on the forums here several months back.
But from what I have seen here, any former military with an honorable discharge get the free school from them.
College would still be better, if they are really hiring in his field. They are not hiring in very many fields. And not at the pay they did even a few years ago. Pay is down ALLOT in almost all professions.

See if he can get funding from WIA the workforce investment act. A coupla weeks of stupid training but then they pay for trucking school or other certificates. Look into it now! They will discourage you at first...cuz they don't want to give it to the faint of heart. They will make you jump hoops....LEAP. But it will be paid for books, training and if he gets a small trucking company to hire em they may even pay the company half of his salary for 3 months. Do the research. I've done it and I'm on my way to trucking school in a coupla weeks :)
