the thing I don't like about dell is they don't give you the software and if you have an issue it's like pulling teethe to get it. At least that was my experience with my mothers desktop after she crashed the whole thing.

RK, I'm not as inept as I made it sound. I get around a pc okay. I'm not IT guy but I manage. My computer is so glitchy right now I am having a hard time moving any files and many of them are corrupted. It's a toshiba and it's over 2 years old so if I will reload it all and see if I can get a few more onths out of it to get past the christmass crunch and then replace it.
Thankfully most my important stuff is on my desktop at home. I just have a bunch of pictures and truck links, parts links etc on here. Well, that and 5 tons of porn lol j/k

\DELL only sends a tech to your "location" to fix the computer when they determine that the problem is a HARDWARE issue, and not a software one.
(On my current DELL), I had a tech guy meet me at a motel in Laredo to replace the hinge-cover, because I had a busted hinge. The only problem there, was that THEY missed an appointment at my house a couple weeks previous, because THEY screwed up. I called a SUPERVISOR and assured them that they would not screw up again. I paid good money for the laptop and extended warranty, and I assured them I would never buy another DELL if they didn't straighten out.
Currently, they will be sending a tech rep out to my house next week to replace a bad mother-board. My USB ports work intermittently, sometimes taking as much as 5 hours to recognize there is something "plugged-in". The only thing I am not happy with is, I have been complaining about increasing symptoms of hardware failure for 5 months and been telling them I suspect it is a bad mother-board, and they are finally seeing things MY-WAY, after replacing the HD and having me re-install the OS three different times.

    Faber Thanks this.

Every DELL I have, including my wife's came with the software CDs. And I have never had any problem replacing the CDs if they became lost or damaged.

yeah, both mine came with cd's.....
i hadnt realied it was in home only for hardware.....though I think we could have narrowed it to hardware after they took over the computer and reinstalled the related drivers -twice on seperate occasions- from their web site....and asking me to go spend money to fix a computer they just sold me....moreover to go buy a microphone for a computer to get fixed they just sold me, that has a mic. built in....wasn't real impressive.
thank you for the corretion, i wasn't aware of that being hardware only....

this toshiba has had qwirks from day one that drive me nuts. when I first got it I was getting the blue screen of death untill I uninstalled all the crap they put in it. But the thing that bud me most is that when you are moving the cursor around the scrren it will automaticly click on links if you go over them, you don't even have to let it hover there just brushing over it will sometimes click it. I'v about tossed it out the window a few times now

Bundled software sucks, I spent 5 hours last night removing it. If your laptop didn't come with recovery discs or the OS you can burn a back up, that was the first thing I did, of course the Blu Ray drive crapped out while burning the third disc...
It's working again, not sure what the problem was.

When I went looking for a desktop I wanted a quality machine without all the garbage so I had one built, I think the company was ACS or AMS, something like that. But when I got it it had windows XP, Office and not much more. That computer is like 5 years old now and I've never had one issue other then one of the dvd burners going out.

Allot of that software is much more invasive then I like to see on my machine

Dont buy an HP, there is no way i would ever do it again, first occurance was with my dv6000------bad on/off switch, bad sound, wouldnt boot right, HP messes around for so long with it then eventually got it back to me, and now 1yr after, motherboard went Kaput......I figured bad computer, so (stupid me) went and got a top of the line 17" loaded HP dv9000----Oh man BIG MISTAKE, this thing is trash, it shut down several times after being used for a month, had 7 different things wrong at once, and HP asked for it to be sent back, well it went back, they said couldnt replicate issues, but they did replace the Lightscribe cd rom (sounded like a squirel was building a nest in there, then fighting over it) so they had it for 4 weeks, then i got it back, and lo and behold, it still has issues, im not dealing with there Tech support, so ill just deal with it......Oh well moral of this rant, Dont buy an HP

I use mostly AOHell but on other programs on my computer it does the same exact thing. My DIL didn't have AOL on her computer and the darn cursor would fly around the screen, sites going mini instead of 'flying' to the task bar, etc.

It's been a few years since I've heard about the Dell warranty horror stories, maybe they have upped their service. I do use a Dell at my training site and really had no problem with it.

As for the HP harddrives, I was wrong, it wasn't a year out but over 2 years. That's what I get for staying up too late and my brain fried from trying to take in too much information from my training LOL!
