You must show two forms of identification in order to obtain a license. If you currently have a license you can use that as one. You can use your birth certificate, passport, etc.... Not certain about a social security card.

I personally just went through this. I had to renew my license. I couldn't find my birth certificate so I just used my passport and my old license. I would however bring everything and anything you can to prove who you are if you are going to be out of state.

Whatever state you are going to, look on their DMV website and they will have a list or criteria as to what you need to bring with you.

If you were born in CA you can order a certified copy of your birth certificate and get it overnighted in a couple days. Had to do this for my son last year.

Would you care to cite that law? I do not have, nor have I ever had, an American birth certificate.

Like I said, look it up on your local DMV website. They have a list on their website as to what they will accept for identification.

You all know we don't like threads going political and then we have to move them to the dungeon. Think before you post. ;)

To the OP, a few have said it already, you can order a certified copy online and overnight it. It might cost you about $40. I suggest you get on the ball and have it sent to where you are going. You can have one by Tuesday or Wednesday. Showing up not prepared is not a good first impression. Read everything they give you or we'll find you posting again complaining about something they did, but you didn't read! :)

I was from Ca. and moved to Az. Changed over to Az. CDL in '06, No birth certificate needed in Az. And I'm not a U.S. citizen. Re-newed license in '10, no birth certificate needed. So, if birth certificates are now needed, it's a fairly new law.

Being that I am currently in Law Enforcement I can tell you that a birth Cert is not required. It is an accepted form of ID but if you have any of the other accepted forms then the certificate is not needed. Like Chompi stated look at the DMV website for the state you want to be licensed in.

Ended up not needing it. Verified with the school that since I am a resident of CA with a CA DL it establishes birth/identity since CA is not using the real ID system we are exempt from needing the birth certificate for DMV or TSA if we have a CA DL and are getting the CDL here in CA.

The wrong paperwork was sent over to me last minute saying I needed it but it was for students going to Iowa not CA
