Everyone wants the good paying loads that's the problem. That's why loads are gone in 30 seconds. You don't have to haul cheap loads but when your sitting and all the loads are cheap, your kinda screwed. If you get more specialized Landstar loads you can do better. They have crane van trailers. Those load pay great money. I thought about trying it but those loads only come from 2 or 3 locations and your kinda dedicated to that customer
People say you can pick the rate you want at Landstar, that's true. If you watch the load board demo I don't think any asked them to put in a minimum rate per mile. Put in say $1.90 a mile and available loads will drop.
That's my point about Landstar and trucking in general. I was listening to podcast about freight rates and it's actually lower then a $1.90 now, yes fuel is cheaper. That's my point about people that claim just don't haul the cheap freight. They make it seem like their is all kinds of loads pay $1.90+. When Landstar shows the load board it wide open and you see every load in the system so it seem like their is all kinds of loads to haul. Yes if you can move a load for $1.32 then take 35% off and still make money that's great. Plus I would say 25%-35% of the loads are not available. If you look at the load board on the top it will say LS has like 16,000 loads. That's 2 loads for every truck, that's not correct because LS has no way of knowing what loads the agents post are real. Some loads still show available even when it's 2 days past their pick-up date. Just before Christmas and Thanksgiving the loads available will rise to 25,000 that's when the rates per mile go up really nice. Southern California the L.A. area use to be the hot spot for LS vans because every one was buying the new flat screen TVs and computers. All that freight is gone. Everyone likes how cheap TVs are today. Well that's because everyone has one and that mean they are not shipping many anymore.
Word is that Schneider has closed Choice to anyone coming in from the outside. Maybe Schneider finance is the way in. I left Choice 3 weeks ago after being in it for 1 year. Do read what is being said over on Schneider posts before you decide. I got tired of low rates. Went back to a dispatch/sliding scale program. Time will tell if it was a right decision.
Does anyone listen to Kevin Rutherford ? Has does a whole show about how to make money as an O/O. He is on satellite radio but also does a podcast.
I listen too all his shows. He pimps Landstar too. Thing that bothers me about Landstar drivers is they always talk gross. Why? Schneider guys talk ttt rates, which gives more accuracy. Sure, gross rate sounds better, but far from what they're getting.
