All this nonsense would not be needed if we would petition the DOT to issue Federal CDL's valid everywhere and with out the residency requirement.

Mexico does that and they require a Trucking School diploma to issue a trucking licence.

    Redtwin Thanks this.

Passing judgement, not at all just think it is rather silly to think that if you make the great amount of money, you have to actually be concerned with not paying that small amount of state tax. Crap the taxes for SS and such are greater than you pay for state taxes, especially when per diem is used.

There are legal issues that you guys may not be aware of - that's all I'm going to say.

Mexico isn't candy land, the way I understand it is if we had their rules, the driver is totally responsible for the truck, load and if there is an accident, there isn't an insurance to fall back on, the driver pays. Now that may have changed and I haven't heard it has but overall, this free flow of cheap and easy licensing to maintain the labor pool of cheap drivers would end up drying up quickly if there was a need to actually go to school.

The petition for a CDL being federal is rather not good, it gives more control over US by the feds and takes the states out of the loop completely - WE DO not need more federal control over us. With the low percentage of people thinking about this - maybe .00001 percent of all truckers - our efforts are better used fighting real issues and real problems with the feds. It is about the same as a cdl holder having automatically a permit to carry a gun in all fifty states.

Like Chinatown has mentioned, I use Escapees RV club for this purpose, live full time in a 5th wheel I park wherever.
A few things to consider: Establishing a domicile is a little more involved than an address, changing your llicense. The best source for all the details is the Escapees website. (Establishing a domicile)
Example: I "moved" from PA to Texas. The dept of Revenue for the state of PA has a list of 50 criteria to determine where your domicile is ( Where do you attend church? Where do you pay union dues? Do you have any relatives in PA? I don't like it either, but the point is you have to make a clean break to the new location. There are no hard and fast rules.
I just did my 2015 taxes and carefully read the requirements for claiming the per diem. You have to have a "home" that you are paying for in order to be away from in order to claim a per diem. I.e rent checks or mortgage payments.
    Good luck

Issues with States Rights on that one... And what would be different than what we have now? We currently need a diploma to sign on with a company. So it's almost a require anyway. And for State taxes you would still need a residency.

Yes, it is passing judgment. When I did it I fully understood that I was putting my deductions at risk. I also know about how 911 effected my CDL. As I said if you feel better paying for a residence that's great, but it don't put you in a position to judge those of us that did not. I also paid my state taxes. As for a real federal CDL I'm not in favor of it. What he have today is fine. We just need some of the patriot act changed.

Not that any government is going to even try to help out this portion of the population that doesn't "live" in their definition of a domicile, but there are ways to satisfy the needs presented.
The fallacy of the idea of having 1 place you return to is in this highly mobile society is it can so easily be defeated. If you have larceny in your heart evading the authorities is what you are good at. So in response, the government makes it difficult on law abiding citizens. In a twisted logic only government can think of if : I put all these regulations out there everyone will abide.
The crash pad idea, with a PMB (private mailbox) would satisfy the strictest requirements put out there by the IRS, banks, taxing authorities, d/l requirements etc. and still allow secure delivery of mail. In reality I get almost nothing at my mailbox, all bills and business I transact is online.
Technology is way ahead of the government on this one.

Couldn't you ask a friend or maybe someone you meet online in 3d chat ,date sites etc if they would mind you using there address ...if they say it might complicate some of their things have them write a letter stating they know you and your. Not living with them at the residence only allowed to receive your mail there
