Everybody here knows that old trucking legends and story's have a life of there own, I have always heard they ran 3 drivers in those Monfort Trucks, my question is WHY? It's less than 1800 miles from Greeley to New York, EVEN with just TWO drivers that is EASILY accomplished and really would require no more than a 60 mph average, even under the old log rules, the truck would arrive in New York in just 30 hours,,,never understood that part?

There's a couple old timers around that ran for them. I doubt 3 drivers, though. The trucks had 4 fuel tanks, and the drivers switched once at a fuel stop half way. 3 drivers wouldn't work at all.

It is possible that the owner had an airplane and wanted to be able to spot his trailers from the air.
the reason I say that,is in the 80's I was working construction and had a company pickup. The owner passed a popular bar that a lot of the foremans hung out at everyday on his way home, but didn't want to come in and see who was driving his pickups that were always parked there. lol
I looked up one day and saw someone messing with my pickup, so went over and it was a guy painting a big number on the tailgate, he told me why. lol
We weren't exactly brain dead, so just started backing in. lol A week or so later the painter was back and painting big numbers on the roof, so he could see them from his helicopter. lol

So, one more question, "IF" I decided to keep the 9 sp direct drive stick and the 275/80/24.5s then change the rear gears, considering my lite weight, less than 46,000 gross, no trailer straight truck, what gear would you change the rear to, remember 75 mph top speed, I ran a calculation that with the 41.0 tall tires, a direct high gear, that 3.23 would give me 75 at 2000 and 65 at 1725, 3.08 would give me 75mph at 1900rpm, this set up also gives me 65mph at 1650 rpm, and 2.93 would be 75 at 1800 and 65 at 1575, maybe I am somewhat spoiled by the newer low rpm motors, but I really can't see running this motor at 2000rpm all day with out any real weight. Thoughts, and thx.

3.08 sounds like a good option.

I was leaning toward 323, but, i would bet 308 would be easier to come by?

Im not sure, guessing it all depends on the axle manufacture and what they offer.

Call Maupins down in Dodge. Sometimes they have random stuff out back in their yard. When I had my FLD I sourced used parts from them a few times.

Talked with an old timer up home today that “knew a lot of the Monfort hands” so take this with a grain of salt:

He said they did have three person teams assigned to a truck, but one person was always home. He claimed they’d run two trips and get off the truck for a trip. He claimed that way the same guys were in the same truck and you always had one guy that was fresh coming off hometime. Is it true? Maybe. But it does make sense.

That , makes a lot more sense to me, Thx, as far as truck salvage yards I have a guy just up the road from me, I just know that this cutoff was from an older truck, not as old as my 372, but I'm guessing early 2000, and those gears were pretty scarce around then, that is all I was saying, but I am going to look into it.
