Stick your head up under the rears. I bet they don't say Detroit. Stop drinking from the company punch bowl

Not trying to sound rude but your letting the salesman dictate a lot of YOUR business.

If you haul less than 70k most of the time or operate primarily flat terrain and lots of top gear cruising, get the direct drive with their 2.16 or 2.28 depending on your target cruise speed. Otherwise get the overdrive and a 2.64 or lower, depending on your speed. The IPM4 is designed for downspeeding at 1125-1200 rpm at cruise speed. Rear end alone does not determine pulling power. It depends on the engine torque curve and spec’ing the right rear and trans to keep it in the sweet spot as much as possible.

The "Detroit powertain" is going to be the dt-12 transmission. It's a 12 speed. Dropping a gear before a hill is going to be more practical than dropping a gear in a "standard" fleet spec 10spd manual.

It is a penny pincher, but is less painfull than before. It works.

It's the shift programing that can turn it Into a complete turd. They have programing so it will shift and apply torque easily to compensate for someone that doesn't know what they are doing. Someone can mash the throttle anywhere and not break something because the truck won't let them, or try not to. But, performance will suffer.

They can preform well and shift harder with more torque depending on how they are programed. Fleet trucks are gutless slow turds.

I just looked right on Detroit's website and it says plain as day "Available ratios 2.16 - 4.778"

I'm suprised they actually offer a 46k rear.

Jesus Christ 2.16 or 2.64’s and 400hp you might as well just pull your trailer with a Ford F550. I hate the state of trucks today. Grow some balls Freightliner.

The 2018 Evolution I just got has Rockwell rears 10 speed od Eaton transmission and 3.25 ratio on 22.5 low profile tires.

It runs 1500 rpm at near 75 mph. Pulls noticeably quicker than the TCA DD15 rated the same on power and torque in the 2013 I had for over 450 k miles.

That one had 3.42 rears on the Rockwell axles.

Direct is a bit more fuel efficient, but didn't stand up as well.

I don't know how they spec the Foodliner tank pullers, other than those are DD13 and have disc brakes on all axles, as well as wide base single tires on the drives.

I'm going to look at the new trucks when I get a chance.

I looked at their specs on the 46,000 lb axle. It pretty much has the same hardware as a 40,000 lb axle. I don't think it would stand up to a vigorous workout for too long.

Are all dt 12 made same?
    Some say 1550 , some 1650!!
Can those be reprogrammed for higher torque?

You're replying to a 5 year old thread and most of the chuckleheads that replied didn't realize a direct drive transmission and tall rearends has been pretty common for years, so not sure I would trust anything they would tell you.
