I’ve spec’d two new Western Stars, and could get either with traditional bolts or huck bolts.

How's the strength of huck bolts? Looking at the explanations it deforms the "nut" to make contact with the threads of the bolt and frame, but if it's able to deform in the first place, what's the holding strength? Is it noticably less than hardened nuts and bolts?

I think they are harder that grade 8. Atleast they cut harder with the blue wrench. I also think the clamp load is more than torquing a bolt of the same size.

The coming loose happens usually where dissimilar metals are together. Different expansion rates.

    Oxbow and pushbroom Thank this.

Love me some huck bolts... Not... We had a set of trucks that had recurring problems with loose cross members. They finally issued a recall to replace all the cross members from the cab back. The new cross member were all bolted together with some sort of special hardened bolt.

Most all on truck frames are Grade 8 or 10.9 Huck fasteners, same as bolted frames.

I see the 10.9 on metric bolts, but have never learned what it means.....so that is the strength, and equivalent to grade 8?

Close enough. They aren't exact but they are very close. 8.8 is equal to grade 5, 8.9 is something like 5% stronger IIRC (pretty rare, never seen 8.9 in real life) and 10.9 is equal to grade 8.

Virtually the same properties of Grade 8 SAE vs ISO 10.9 bolt. Grade 5 and ISO 8.8 very close also.

Tug Toy and Oxbow Thank this.
