like so many things there is not really a simple one-off answer, I have not driven in forever and none of it would qualify for dot regulated .... I just filled out my firs applications over the last few days and there are companies that will take your experience as what matters is running under DOT regulations .... that does not mean that of 150 companies you can find over 20 that will take the time driving regulated just not OTR ..... you could contact a dozen or so recruiters but remember thay can tell tall tales .... and then get their check and go .. what you have to do is maybe in the rain or something and for what recruiters make they (often) get good at sitting in an office and talking nice stuff....

I added wireline to my job-search areas after talking to J-W and then when I drove by Cased Hole Solutions branch yard in giddings Texas I realize wireline operation is not just climb in a straight truck

    OBSERVE

now, if they have to make a rule so that one can go take a leak then maybe you want the training ~ if you do your prior work you can get on the list of a lot of companies - some majors really want to take the feed from schools .....

While I agree he should go with his dad's offer, I disagree with your statement about being stuck working for crappy companies if you get your CDL on your own. It simply isn't true. There are many good companies that will hire recent grads. Don't get stuck thinking that you must go to a mega-carrier as a recent grad. Nothing could be further from the truth.

To the OP, check into community colleges in your area. I know where Carol Stream is at. Check out Elgin Community College, Oakton CC, Kishwaukee CC, McHenry County College, Waubonsee CC or Triton College. Community Colleges often have excellent Driver training. That is whar I did and I got a job with a good company out of school, spent 18 months there and then moved up to a large LTL company and now grose $1200/week minimum (oftentimes more). It is a great way to go.

I have looked at the community colleges, for sure. I guess I don't like the whole semester-long training while it could be done in a couple of weeks. But if it's cheaper...

The course I took at Il Valley Community College was only 4 weeks long. I know the courses at Sauk Vally and Waubonsee are the same length. Not sure on others.

Maybe I need to look again. I know the program at Elgin is a whole semester, three courses, one at a time.
