I work for a gentleman who has an Oregon class C license at one of his properties in California (His legal residence is Oregon but he has properties around the country). I possess a California class A and drive for him intermittently in CA and OR. He would like to get his class A (mostly for driving his pick up and cattle trailer), but retain his Oregon license. In other words, he would like to get his Oregon CDL.

If he gets his Oregon CDL learner's permit, may he drive with me in California on that permit? I know he may not drive with me in Oregon, as the law very specifically states that he would have to have an Oregon licensed driver with him when operating in OR, but can he drive one of his rigs, title in OR in California, with his Oregon learner's permit, with me, a California CDL holder next to him? (He wants to practice here under me and another driver's instruction and return to Oregon to test. He has extended business here and no trucks or drivers currently in OR)

Even though his pickup and trailer require a class A, I do not believe he can test with such a rig, mostly because of the brakes, correct?

    Thanks.

I am not a cdl driver yet, but according to my cdl manual the skills test must be taken in the vehicle the cdl will be used to drive or a similar vehicle. I would think he would have to take his driving test in his pick-up with his trailer attached. The manual may also talk about who you can drive with when you have your permit, but I am not sure. As the person before me commented, I don't see why he would not be able to drive with you for training as long as he has a permit allowing interstate driving and not only intrastate driving.

A check of the arkansas Learners A shows no apparent restriction except two.

One a full blooded CDL A holder must be in that right seat at all times and you are only good for a year.
