I'm striking out as far as my used truck hunt goes, found a couple maybe's but both had deals done on them...so might go new again..

Couple questions re the new Paccar engines,
What kind of MPG's are people getting from them? My dealer of course says they are getting great mileage with a 389 or 388, as high as 7.5-8 ?:biggrin_2556:
How much DEF fluid are you going thru ?
and of course, maintenance and reliability??
Any driveability issues? how do they pull hills etc?

Any info from anybody using this engine will be greatly appreciated!!!:biggrin_25514:
    Thanks!!
    Colin.

first of all SCR is not so good thing. any SCR fault and engine derate (40%) and 50 mph speed limit. SCR is sencetive to temperature and ad blue must be made on distiled water (not o demineralized) becouse you can damage catalistic converter. No oil ore fuel must be in SCR tank, no SCR in gas can! SCR pump will be damaged.

If you ignore CEL and keep driving with SCR fault converter, NOx sensor, dozing valve and exaust temperature sensors may be damaged.

Well, about engine. It is made of DAF 95 UPEC engine, but it is not UPEC (PLD), it is SMART. It is mix of two systems. PLD pump units and electronically controlled injectors (like CRD injector). So IMO, this system is simple and reliable comparing with classic CRD (Renault DCI, MAN D20/26/28/Maxxforce, Mercedes OM471/DD13/15/16). This system is made by Delphi with Bosch MS7 ECM.

Mechanically engine is good like DAF UPEC, but faster a bit, more powerfull and 5% of fuel economy comparing with DAF 95 UPEC.

Unfortunatly no pre emission version of Paccar MX is available now. Euro-5 and EPA2010+ only

Your fuel milage numbers are a bit on the high side. You should expect to see around 6.5 running 62 mph in a T660 with full fairings. You should also expect to see DEF usage at 2-3% of fuel usage. So for evey 100 gallons of fuel you should be expecting to use 2-3 gallons of DEF.

I'm sure the numbers the dealer gave me as far as MPG was imperial gallons as I'm in canada so 6.5 US gallon is almost 8 imperial. Ill take that. My big worrie is the complication of the truck. My Cascadia was a nightmare and I'm glad I'm rid of it. Not sure I want to dive back in the new truck pool. But slim pickings for usde up here now and I'm real picky so I am thinking of looking at new again.

Run a mile from the MX engine Elroy.....it will break you....these engines are okay for light running/duty cycles, but will blow up into a ball of scrap when put under pressure....buy a Cummins/Caterpillar/Detroit...They are better engines and at least you can get them repaired and get parts reasonably Stateside...Read how an Irish owner operator got on with the MX in the following thread.

let me disagree, u say CAT, Cummins, DD are much better, but you compare to old engines!

All new EPA2010 and Euro-5 engines are not so tought like previous were. DD13/15/16/Mercedes OM471 are common rail engines (less reliable SMART fuel system, but more powerfull and more fuel efficient), but Mercedes and DD engines use BlueTech, it is SCR too!

CAT does not offer EPA2010 engines now.

New Scania and Cummins engines are XPI, it is a kind of CRD and of course they use SCR!

So all new engines are hedache!

One my client wants to purchase old cummins ore DD on JY, rebuild it and swap his DD15 with SCR!

Granted they all have their issues Pablo, but that MX is a pile of dung backed up by a lousy warranty. Not sure what Paccar were thinking when they brought that out,but I can assure you it will break a lot of small hauliers in the US over the next ten years if the European experience is anything to go by. US engines are designed and built for US conditions....from what I've seen of the MX to date,I am very doubtful about its suitability to US conditions

Ok thanks, food for thought. I am expanding my used search to western Canada but the prices there are crazy.

Can't complain about the DAF /MX engines I run.
We also have Cummins , Cat,Vovo, Mercedes,MAN,Fuso,Hino,Nissan and Detroit in class 8trucks.
The MX engines we have have only needed water pump (Bad batch of antifreeze) replacements and nothing else.(420 000miles).
They are only challenged on fuel by the less powerful straight six Mercedes engines.
We have a regular run at 125 000lbs from sea level up to 5900ft altitude in 350 miles.
This is tough on engines and so far not one issue.
We only have 7 of them but the engines have been good.
