I could be wrong, but I was thinking that we were talking about allowing pets after training? Many companies have put a policy in place that requires a period of anywhere from 3 months - 1 year after you solo before allowing pets. I'm sure this maybe something insurance companies are instigating, as i could see how it could be distracting, regardless of your experience.

first of all RJ, my grandpa and my dad were career truck drivers. I remember sleeping on the doghouse in cabovers until I was 6 if i rode with them anywhere. Both of them carried pets with them, boston terriers to be exact. Neither of them lost mileage by carrying a pet and their trucks were kept in immaculate condition. Sadly it appears as I am not looking at going into the field I will be having to give up my baby. She is used to riding with me everywhere, and I have also used her at work (I'm a correctional officer currently) we have used her before to search for contraband, and illegal substances at the gate as well as within the unit. She is used to riding as my dad took her with him for a little while before he retired, but since I will be signing on as a student driver obtaining my CDL I have found no companies that will accept both pets and do CDL training.

Rebel I can truly feel your pain I rescued my girl because she was going to be put down solely based on her breed. I have invested money in her for basic K9 training al the way up to tactical training for K9 officers, losing her is going to be as painful for me as some people over their families. I work 8-12 hour days and she has never urinated or defecated within my home because she knows it is her home to. i also live in an apartment so she is used to the enclosed environment, and knows that at the end of the day we both will be getting our exercise, she makes coming home a joy, because in my line of work I am no longer a people person. She is always happy to see me and after even the most stressful day she has her smile on and can make me smile as well.

werner has a pet policy and it dosent matter what the breed is, you pay a pet deposit of 250.00 up front and they deduct 5.00 per check until it reaches their amount.

well O.T. I called Werner but where I fall short with them is not having the CDL or training. It looks like I am about to be filling out paperwork for FFE.

Know of any pet 'size' restrictions? I was told there were not, but it also says 'other restrictions apply' on the website .. I'd hate to commit, do my 90 days, and they say .. uh, never mind .. it's too big, or something. I've learned on these forums to question everything you're told, especially by the schools and recruiters.

They seem like a great Company to start with .. compared to all the negative comments about many/most of the other 'starter' companies.

    Thanks,

Steve (handle is my name .. not how I drive!) :biggrin_25525:

restrictions on pets aren't usually size related.. they'll more likely be "dogs and cats only" sort of restrictions. Which means I can't drag a 25 foot boa with me, darnit

Some companies do have a size limit for pets - no pets over 35 pounds or something similar.

bleagh. What's the point of a 35 pound dog?

If you can punt if over the fence, it's not a pet, it's dinner

I agree with ya there. Anything under 35 pounds is just a live squeek toy! I've got a 60 pound bloodhound-doberman mix. She's a pretty cool dog. I've always had big dogs though. We had a Newfoundland when I was a kid that weighed in at 180 pounds and could put his front paws on the top of a 6 foot fence. That was a dog!

As far as I'm concerned, when you hire onto a company, they already control every element of your life, where you'll go, home time, ect...they keep you out there for weeks or months at a time....

The least they can do is allow you to have a pet, a companion.
Some dogs are great for travel..small ones or older calmer ones...

And many drivers now are opting for felines, cats...I even met a lady who had a pet bird...

It's your life, and your time...it's worth finding a company that suits your needs...cause if you don't you'll just end up quiting...
