I still don't understand. How is it that I'd be a bigger insurance risk with 8 years of driving experience, as opposed to some new driver just out of driving school? I fully expect to have to go out with a trainer for a few weeks if/when I get hired somewhere. I just don't understand the logic in a company hiring a total greenhorn over an experienced driver (recent experience or not). At worst, the company will look at us both as "new" drivers, and I should be in equal competition. Can someone explain to me exactly why companies would not consider an ex-driver?

Im not saying they wont consider you, its just that your experience may not mean as much as you would like it to. Best thing is to call and talk to the recruiter.

I am not sure what the training period is at Interstate Dist. Co. because when I worked for them I started as an experienced driver. I do know that they are a very pet friendly company $750.00 deposit taken out of pay $100.00 a week $150.00 of that is non refundable. They have at least 4 plastic cage type kennals outside at most large terminals.(Would recommend lysol spray before putting animal in) not all pet owners are responsible! If you are a responsible pet owner and take the proper time to keep your equipment and pet clean they are a very good company to work for. There equipment is nice and staff is exceptionally friendly. The only reason I am not still with them is I had to come off road to care for my father who has cancer.I turned my truck in and was asked if I had paid to have it proffesionally detailed I told them no it is always this clean! I received my $600.00 pet deposit back within 2 weeks of leaving there employment. Also there is a great kennel just a couple of exits east of Lebonon TN terminal called Fur Persons 615-443-4742 they are awsome ! I don't know what they use to bathe dogs but my long haired australian shepard dog smelled great for 3 months even when he got wet in the rain.Tell them at Fur Person that Lucky Dog misses them.My dog was rescued and is shy around most people, but he loved going to this kennel.Good luck out there and if you take your pet on a truck please be responsible, for the irresponsible pet owners are the reason so many companies do not allow pets anymore!!!Also Fur Person kennal is only accessable by bob-tail or car.

Hi Kat,
Just wanted to say thanks for this post/thread. I'm in a similar situation. I was an OTR driver until 2005. A couple years ago, I adopted a great yellow Lab-mix, who is my best friend. I'm looking at going back over the road and am looking for a company that will allow me to have him.
One option I'm looking at is buying my own truck. Of course, this is a big step to consider for a new driver, but the company can't say as much against a pet if you're paying the bills.
I've read most of this thread and the information has helped me a lot. But now I've got to go and walk Luther and then get ready for work (ugh). I'll finish reading the thread later today.
Have you had any luck finding a company yet?Attached Files:

Tell that to injun, watch her light you up. -
I love the attitude of so many "newbies" and "wannabes" on here..... If they don't do what I want/need.."
Reality check people...... it's their truck and their company. You need them to hire you, they do not need you. Get over yourself people and stop sounding like a 4 year old. -
They also might look as you as a high risk of staying with the company. It cost around $3000 to hire someone and put them through orientation.
I know what you are saying though. You go home and drive local for awhile and they think you are inexperienced all of a sudden. Driving is like riding a bicycle. Once you learn, you never forget.
EDIT: Dang, another old thread brought back to life. Responding to air. -
Im proud to be a newb.
Why? I have alot ahead of me, it wont be boring, and I'll feel alive. And welcome to the 'me generation' .
But I dont see how someone asking if there is a company that washes your back, shines your shoes, pays you 10 dollars a mile and lets you have weekends off is saying 'gimmie this because you need me' its simply wondering if its out there.
