I just took on with a hometown company and I'm picking up a reefer they bought. I ran reefer for 3 months when I first got my CDL and know some things to look at...but there must be considerations beyond a pretrip when taking possession of used trailer.
Right now all I know is its a carrier unit but no year or anything yet. Dispatch is sending me the info this afternoon.
Does anyone have a checklist for Inspecting this before I take it off the lot?

Seems like a lot of hours but honestly, not really your concern. It’s the carriers problem.

Understood. But they're a very small business and it's in my best interest to be diligent. The man with the purse couldn't be the one to get it so I'm being the best stand in I can.

Yeah it ll have the advance micro so you can run through a pre trip. Run it on cool mode, see if the ball is up in the sight glass and all the other usual things, belts oil coolant. You probably already did that by now anyway but good luck.

I found a sight glass but couldn't see anything in there.m_ logical thought was its running and cooling so it's not all the way down so maybe it's all the way full?
Loud as heck but not as much vibration as I expected, seems pretty solid.
Thank you for the help. I did find a manual online but have not yet looked at it.

Before you consider it, get it to a carrier dealer and have them look at it.

Have them check the charge, the oil in the compressor and the shuttle valves. Also check the control unit.

Pull a sample of oil for an oil analysis

I would hope that your company looked at the trailer before buying it. Would be pretty foolish for them to not inspect it first.

But, at least a good and really thorough pretrip. Tires, suspension, breaks, landing gear, doors, lights, air it up and listen for leaks, look at all the cross members underneath the trailer for damage, look inside for evidence of water leaks.

May seem silly, but might be good to take pics of existing damage so the company/seller can't say the damage wasn't there before you picked up the trailer.

You can also talk with the seller and ask questions about the unit.
