Can’t tell by the picture but it looks like it might be bolted to the pallet. In which case you secure the pallet.

    Oxbow and cke Thank this.

No way, I’ll bet that weighs close to 10,000. Hooking to a wooden pallet when there’s securement holes to hook to is crazy.

I wasn’t really asking about how to secure it.
I usually never really trust the bolts if something is actually bolted to a pallet

But Is using a binder alone as a securement device a good or bad habit ?

That's kind of a can of worms.

    It is legal.

Some people, and I think @Rontonio is one though I could be mistaken, feel that using a hardened binder without a chain that will stretch a bit before breaking is unsafe. Others disagree with that idea, and binders going from the trailer directly to equipment is something that is fairly common in the heavy haul and equipment side of things.

I don't like it, for two reasons. One is where it's attaching to the trailer, you are basically using one side of a stake pocket, which is not designed to be used that way. Second (and I guarantee some here all disagree with me) is that you are putting stress on the hooks of the binder in a way that it was not designed for. In a way you are tip loading the hook instead of putting the force at the bottom of the throat, where it should be. Those hooks are designed to grab onto a chain, or if something else then the piece it is grabbing should be in line with the direction of the pull. This situation, and many others that you see with equipment haulers doing it this way, stresses the hook differently than it was designed.

20190222_140321-1.jpg That's about as tall and narrow as l like to go before chaining the top to both sides lol

If you can properly tighten a ratchet binder without using a chain and it reaches from a tiedown point on the load to a takedown point on the trailer it is perfectly safe. The only question is how he connected to a pocket, I prefer to hook to the far side of the pocket as you are then applying torque to 4 welds instead of one. In the case of the picture it will not be a problem as the load is a lightweight unit as evidenced by the lightweight base material (galvanized sheet metal).
After all you don't build a good foundation under an outhouse.
