If it looks like you are rowing a Viking ship when you turn that's normal and "just broke in", right?

Next thing you know they will have seats that aren't a piece of foam with an old tarp scrap wired to the metal pan and stereos!

Man I hadn't even thought about a pony motor in a long time. I knew when I mentioned steering clutches you would perk up. I'm sure with the type of trailer you pulled you've had plenty of experiences feathering clutches climbing slick beaver tails.

HA! Ya, try finding a gasket set for a pony motor, or rings, or bearings...................Although we still have a headgasket for our 15!

    tsavory and truckdad Thank this.

That makes sense. I've seen a few motors in trucks that are white and wondered whatthe other criteria was.

I feel kinda sorry for those lowbed drivers that never had the simple pleasure of starting a pony motor on a D-6,9U or a D-8 14A series on a cold morning, engaging the starting clutch with the compression release lever in "start" for a minute then flipping the lever over to "run" for another minute, then opening the throttle & hearing it fire up. Kill the pony motor & shut of the gas valve. Then engaging the clutch with the main box in gear, let it all warm up a bit while getting the ramps out, layin out of chains, signs & flags. Put the towel on the seat, then pull around & line up on the trailer. Raise the cable blade right up til the blocks meet, then ease back on the clutch lever with your left hand & start up the ramps just feathering the clutch and working the decelerator so your moving as slow as possible. Left foot just touching the left & right pedals & right hand on both frictions, up you go, gently pulling each friction to keep the ole girl straight on your imaginary line just inside the left track, running the length of the trailer. The 30 ton 14A breaks over as gently as a feather falling & down onto the deck you go, still working the frictions & now a little brake to make it perfectly straight on the trailer, 1" more to the left than the right. Set the brakes with the ratchet lever in front of the right arm rest, close the throttle, engage the clutch. Done. Got carried away here a little. What did I miss... Hope some of you can visualize this. AND I got PAID to do this..
