I am an owner operator and have a hazmat endorsement on my license. The company I'm hauling for doesn't have a hazmat permit nor do they have hazmat insurance. Do they need to have a special type of insurance for me to haul the load? I explained to the broker and he told me not to worry about it as long as I had the endorsement on my license.

Here is a good number to keep in mind during situations like this. 10000, that's where the fines start for you and your carrier, not to mention the hit that you will take after being fired and possibly sued by your company. Good Luck

The company you are hauling for does not have hazmat permit nor insurance??

    No Thank You.

Reason. Law says Hazmat Insurance in amount of one million to five million for those engaged as a company in hauling hazmat materials.

YOU are most likely leased to or somehow have ties to this company. IF something happens YOU hold the bag. And they burn, but they walk away, you wont.

    A placarded load?

He's wrong. In what universe can you haul hazmat without hazmat authority, insurance, and permits? An endorsement on your license is necessary, but not sufficient.

Do you really mean hazmat permit or do you maybe mean hazmat authority? You have to list what hazmat types you will haul when you setup an MC number. Insurance companies will see that and base your insurance on it. Then you also have to get permits.

one million liability, annual HM number from DOT carried on the trucks,; kinda haz mat lite...

    -or-

Five Million liability, annual number PLUS Haz Mat Safety Permit form DOT to handle everything.

Then all the training involved and renewed every three years.

your endorsement is step one on a tall ladder.
