Take it from this guy, he backs triples while drinking a coffee, text messaging and reading the paper.... Take a deep breath and relax, pretty soon the supertruckers on here will tell you exactly what you need to do and how on their first solo run they blindsided 53 foot doubles into a dock in Manhattan in rush hour Macys parade traffic..... You have your days where you can hit the most jacked up dock blindside on one shot, and then there are days where you screw up a straight back...It happens, just remember. Rome was not built overnight, neither will you hone your backing skills just during school. I promise you that you will learn!
I work for UPS and I drive a day cab... When I back into the king pin I look out of my rear window... OP you should consider treating the trailer as if you are just backing up a cube van or a straight truck into a loading dock... Your school is kinda strict, I have to say my biggest weakness is blindsided backing cuz I've never practiced on it or being tested on...
@justinld.....Take your time backing....and THINK....takes a little time ...but if you have common sense....One day you will get it
Justin, stop stressing. And don't overthink it. Watch your tandems and look at what they are doing and at what they are gonna do based on what you do with the steering wheel. Hell, it took me two years of driving before backing "clicked" for me, and I know I ain't the only one. I've seen drivers out there who've been driving for decades who still have trouble backing. Mostly flatbedders (ducking to avoid things being thrown at me by flatbedders), but some van and tanker guys too. Backing will click for you, too. And how exactly does one "hare" a rookie? Is shaving involved? Do we have to stretch their ears and staple cottontails to their spines? Enquiring minds want to know, and so do I. Don't ya hate days like that? Spend the past week banging out spots that bobtail cabovers would flinch at, finally get some wide open space and discover you've completely forgotten how to back the truck in a straight line without a trailer on the sight side to line up on! Some days I swear I couldn't back that truck into a dock the size of a football field! Happens to all of us occassionally...
Hell, Wallbanger will even buy the first sammich! Off the 'Dollar Menu', of course. No need to be greedy!
my drivin was alot better than my backin, when i first seen the alley dock i was like no fkn way,, than sob it came to me, and i aced it, but still a nervous wreck backin into some of the tightest docks or truckstops, but i have no pride, i will be like driver, i need someone to help guide me in,, ## it....
