Do employers usually ask the reason for discharge?

Couldn't you just say yes I served in the Military until I was discharged and leave it at that?

I mean no offense but, is Amazon really going to care?

If you are apply to a good company, and you have a clean driving record, no will care what your military service record is.

Oh, so you want to work for one of those fly-by-night 1099 companies? That already IS a 'second chance' company, more like a 'no hope elsewhere' company. Guaranteed that you will make cr@p for pay (if you get paid at all...). Run far, FAR away from this 'opportunity'.

AFP's are not 1099 companies. They typically have 20-25 trucks. Amazon helps them get them. Amazon pays for fuel and maintenance. The AFP takes care of all the other stuff, (Administrative). Local drivers get paid by the hour and only work 4 days a week.

the military experience would add to your getting hired as it is driving a truck

if it's not on your DD-214, don't mention it.

if asked, just you didn't get your hair cut often enough or some such innocent thing. lol.

    No , again No !
The only time that will matter is getting a fed / possible state related job .
If you are getting a hazmat for your license , double check the statute of limitation / disqualifiers before taking the test ( background checks are mostly 10 years ) .
You can still get the license and whatever endorsements including hazmat . Just a heads up .

    Cqguy Thanks this.

If there is a specific question on the application DO NOT LIE. Lying on the application is always a firing offense, even if the thing you lied about was minor and would never have prevented you from being hired.

...most times a line asks if you were in the military and what years ( mostly gov related jobs or ammo/ explosive / high risk type stuff).
Also , all military bases have a truck inspection entrance gate where they check you out and the truck and if your conviction shows up on there ID check , then you won't get on base 99% of the time . So check out your status BEFORE you drive up. ( seen it happen a thousand times).

Set yourself up for success -- NOT failure.

    How?

While driving 88mm equipment in the military is better than nothing -- it's certainly not nearly the same as driving 70-ft big rigs on American streets & roads.

Instead of attempting to start things off with Amazon (or similar) -- sign up with a carrier that routinely trains drivers how to handle things here back in the States -- & on a truly professional level.

We (the trucking industry) don't need more drivers; we need more drivers that are truly professional-grade....& show it....whenever they drive -- or step out of their cab.

Some veteran-friendly carriers that fit this description (all of these I've seen hiring of late):
    • Maverick Transportation
    • TMC
    • Roehl Transport (best selection of hometime options)
    • Werner Enterprises
    • Swift Transportation
    • Knight Transportation
You don't say where you are located -- but it's quite possible that one or more of the above list are hiring in your area.

Drive for one of them for AT LEAST A YEAR -- then look at Amazon, if that's what you still want.
