It's a used truck, it's always going to want something out of you no matter how much you spend on it. There'll always be an oil leak or air leak you need to hunt down somewhere. But for 80k on top of the purchase price you should pretty well have all the major stuff taken care of.

You gotta do what you think is right. I don't think the cost of anything is coming down anytime soon. Too much demand, too little supply. As far as fixing up an old truck. Parts are getting harder to find and more expensive. If it was me, I would keep the new one and sell the old one at the inflated price, but that's just me.

Parts for older trucks may not be as hard to get as new truck parts though, of course one would hope a new truck wouldn't need much in the way of parts for a while. The horror stories about sensors going out and shutting down a new truck for weeks at a time come to mind.

well to my understanding that is quite true, I will say that having bought some random parts in the past couple of years the prices on older truck parts are certainly going up through dealerships. Additionally, I expect at some point those parts may not be supported as readily. One of my trucks has an air compressor that the head is 180° different Then about 99% of the units made in that particular year. Five years ago if you wanted one you had to pre-order it, i could only get reman, and it was like a six week lead time. I don’t imagine it’s any shorter at this time on money or shelflife.

I haven't heard anything better about parts availability for new trucks. Guy I know had his air compressor crap out on him on a 2020 Pete with an X15, it was 1,300 bucks just for the compressor at Pete, that was before having it put on. I haven't had any issues getting anything for my 97 W9 and E model Cat, yet.

I agree, sucks all around. I've had problems. A guy wiped my drivers side mirror from my truck. Pete said there wasn't one in the country. Had to goto a junk yard for it. My dealer ran out of cat water separator filters about 6 weeks ago. I had my wiper switch go out. Pete had 1 in stock. Just rebushed my truck. Took 2 weeks to gather all the parts. And the list goes on. With less pre eld trucks on the road, parts are harder to find. Why stock or make parts that you will sell very few of each year?

Might want to wait until right after the first of the new year to sell for tax purposes. I would imagine the expenses of rebuilding the older truck will rack up next year

If you decide to sell it

    Sell it at an auction

right now that is the ONLY way to get what it’s worth .

just keep a list of all the people contacting you who want to buy it and let them know about the auction .

Not only would I get a pre emission rig, I’d get a pre computer rig
With a mechanical Injection pump and not one single sensor or computer on the truck at all.

yes it will use more fuel.

But it won’t be broken down all the time for wiring and sensors and emission crap and sitting for weeks waiting on a sensor or harness .

friend of mine got a new W9 in April ( was supposed to be delivered the previous November ). And they have had several problems with the injector harness under the valve cover , and the KW dealer near where they broke down couldn’t have cared less that a brand new $240k tractor was broken down. They told them two weeks or more just to get the harness ,
The truck owner called around and found a harness at a Pete dealer nearby , bought it and paid a road service to install it just so they could get rolling again .

the dealers Do NOT care how long it takes to get your truck rolling again .
The KW dealer was too lazy to pick up the phone and find a harness . they clicked on it on their dealer inventory computer and it wasn’t in stock so they just gave up

this is the new attitude with vehicles under warranty.
It costs you $10k a week for the truck to sit , but it doesn’t cost the dealership anything , so they just let it sit . They can’t be bothered to pick up the phone and make a few calls and find the part to get you rolling again.

Like I said in another thread, if the truck would’ve been delivered back in September I would have never entertained the idea of selling it. But here we are at the end of the year and I can still use it for what I need it for in 2021 and also make a profit from it after the first of the year. I’ve been parked since the end of October and since then I’ve been meeting people and making connections on some seasonal work. Right now having everything paid for and only working 4-6 months a year and throwing money at my old cabover sounds a lot better than doing what I’ve been doing with a brand new truck.
