no im just going by what landline now stated a few times that current eobr/elog units will need to be updated or modified to meet proposed rules .if what they state is true then you are not running under proposed rules so the game will change .. personally i will just adapt and keep on rolling .a good 2 millon mile accident ticket free driver will still be in demand i hope lol

When's the last time OOIDA scored a victory for you guys with the government?

Wherever OOIDA stands on an issue, it seems like you guys end up getting the opposite.

I specifically recall in their announcements. as I read them in the various news feeds, that one of the conditions of the ELD's would be that the driver would be able to edit all but DRIVING time, and also that the carrier would not be able to edit without the approval of the driver. Their reasoning fell under the driver harassment issue that the courts said they had to address.

I have two trains of thought on this, first off, I can EASILY see this getting to a point where a touch pad is on the ELD and it will require a fingerprint to "log" the truck moving, if at a shop, as stated, an identifier number will be assigned like a PIN number. I think they are way over thinking a lot of this crap.

On the other hand, as some of you know we went fleet wide ELD (very small fleet) about a year ago, I had seen all of the presentations and had used the unit for short local runs, day out.

But last week I had the opportunity to take a full week long run out and see what it was truly all about, it was a fairly tight run with multiple stops, p/u's and deliveries, and yes, just for the hell of it throw some 4" of snow, rain and fog for about two days into the mix coming thru Va/Wv. I have to tell you, for me, and the way our operation is tailored, they work well, almost too easy, and I will tell you I undoubtedly pickup time WITH the box.

Now, for operations where drivers have VERY tight schedules, appointments, or little decision making freedom, I CAN see some issues, but I think some are missing the picture, a LOT of those issues have more to do with the way the regs are written than the way the ELD works.

The original title of this thread was do they make you safer? The ONLY person that can make a truck truly safer is the guy behind the wheel, now, with that said, IF one were to get involved in a messy accident, I WOULD feel safer knowing that what was recorded is verbatim what was driven.

The way the legal system is these days, YES, I would feel "safer" knowing that my time logged would not be as heavily scrutinized.

Just my two cents on the subject.

I believe they might still be able to edit the unit, but the original information, and the changed information are to reside in the unit for tracking of the change. In other words, if you were running loose leaf logs, they would want to see the one you removed and edited.

It's going to be fun make the world of trucking a continuously changing landscape. Orientation is no longer going to be a drug test, 3 videos and driver manual. They'll have to focus on training for the specific ELD device that is used by that company. In our case that is going to mean replacing our orientation staff since they have demonstrated an inability to understand the device.

You will certainly have your hands full.

This proposal, which I expect to come into being will make major changes to the industry. I may return to the full time paramedic life or back to tax accounting.

I know they are coming, and I guess I will just have to adapt like everyone else when the time comes. Im sure they are easy to use and all that but its just the fact that they are being forced upon us for no valid reason that I have seen as of now. I could see them being mandated for repeat HOS violators for starters. Sure will suck being 20 minutes from your destination and having to shut it down.

Went to an EMS seminar over the weekend of the 3/15.

They talked about the different generations.

You are right about them, they will "want" the electrical connection.
