I had my finace` send off for all the info we could get from OOIDA about becoming completely independant. Lot's to read. I have a pretty good knowledge of how it work's for the most part but now the question is where do I start? I would assume financing the truck first but what about the truck payment's and such until you receive your authority, plate's, permit's and all that other good stuff.

Starting a good solid customer base is another biggie. I want to avoid those who have lumper services and try to charge $300 to unload ripping me off sense I would have to be the one to pay for it. I'm looking me toward those that unload their own freight at their expense. After all we are only there to move the freight not load and unload it for them or am I missing something here?

From my understanding O/O's can charge the customer by the hour or however for sitting in a dock longer than a specified time limit so who really get's charged the unloading fee?

I'm not sure when I'll be back but I'll try and check in on this post and add most as I go. I also have my finace` interested in becoming a freight broker so if she want's to take it on and make a career of it then I'll pay for the class'. I have a few name's and number's I have recieved while on the road this past trip out and a couple of reputable first time truck buyer's finance companies. Anyone else care to share any info?

Also as an experianced O/O, what would be your prefered commodity/trailer type as far as pulling in more money? I was told to just try and lease on with Landstar first and give it a go once I got my truck to see how it play's out. So now I'm in the process of changing companies to try and better myself and actually make some money rather than the chump change I have been making and miles I've been getting ripped off on. Thank's in advance for your replies.

I just wanted to say hello, i have been lurking for a couple of days. A little background .. i was a company driver for two yrs, i quit a couple of days ago. It was the only company i worked for. I bought i truck and was going to lease out with them. But, when i talked to the recruiter, they said i could not lease out with them. The reason was they said i was from Nc and they could not cover me for work comp. Anyway, i ran into this guy he has his own authority. i am thinking about leasing out with him. He has two ways of paying me.

    1. he pays .75 for all miles loaded and empty and all fuel. Even if the fuel prices go up.

    2. the other way is 1.25 for all mile loaded and empy.

I have a question , since im starting out which payment option you think i should do. I'm leaning toward the .75 cmp.

He says most work is drop and hook, no northeast, he pays for all scales tickets . i wil pay for my base plates and bobtail insurance. For the miles he is sayin i will be getting between 2500 and 3000 a wk. Should i go for it or look somewhere else?

I have never heard of a deal like this.

Most deals are a percentage. 75% is normal. Plus 100% OF FUEL surcharge.

Other deals are by the mile plus 100% of fuel surcharge.

The deal you posted is out of the norm.

One of the best things you can do for quick answers is use the "SEARCH" function for this forum. Your questions have been asked previously, many times over. There is no clear cut answer to many questions as everyone's situation, finances, time limitations and such are different.

Start by deciding how you are going to set up your company . . . sole proprietorship, LLC, etc and then go from there. I have it pretty much all mapped out, waiting to get the funds together to get things started. I plan way, way ahead . . . we are at least a year away from getting hubby his own truck. Unless we win the lottery.

Oh, wait, you have to buy lottery tickets to win the lottery. Knew I was doing something wrong!

I would suggest getting more experience before becoming an O/O. Many long time O/O's are selling their truck and going for the security of a job with benefits, regular pay.
    Ask around.
