Stuck in contract with the devil

He’s a company driver that signed a contract for CDL school and job.

Here’s what the OP signed onto..

“You will be hired on as a paid, full time employee right from day one. The only expenses you will have are your Commercial Learner's Permit (which you will get in your home state before arriving), transportation to and from Marinette, WI, and food/drink. All traditional expenses are covered by Veriha to help you keep focused on becoming the best driver you can be.

If you fulfill the 18 month contract your training will be free. If you fail to fulfill the contract you will owe $12,500 for the CDL training course, the hotel room, the continuing education that was provided, and all other costs associated with your hiring and training.”

Now they just want out of the contract to go make the big bucks with a real Carrier..

 

How do they come up with 18 months/$11,000?

Even the most expensive option for their "high-quality" instruction on their website, which includes 21 days of room and board, only comes out to $6,785 plus a few incidentals.

Theives and I was desperate to get out off the couch

 

I’d talk to two lawyers. One about the contract and if he can find an out. The other a bankruptcy attorney. And find out if he can bankrupt you out of the contract.

They are the best two options you have.

 

From my research, this is par for the course. They lay out a contract (Which is always a nice thing to read) They pay for the school (Which would be the first red flag for me: How much IS the school) then they house you (How much IS that?) Feed you (and how much IS that?) They find someone who will pass you and sign off everything THEY need from you, then they quickly get you in the truck with a "seasoned" driver, and then after a few weeks throw you to the wolves.

Anyone can get this information, very quickly. Its advertised everywhere. Forums, You-Tube. Its not rocket science to understand what a Mega Carrier wants. If you're desperate, they know it because you showed up at their door.

Fulfill the contract and bail.... otherwise incur some severe penalties. Big boy pants have to come on now. You signed a deal fully well knowing that if you had done some research, you would have known the trap doors some of these guys lay out for you.

Listen, this is a big boys world. You can't just sign anywhere you please without taking some responsibility. There are a bunch of companies out there who are like wolves lying in wait. Not all of them, but there are more than just a few. Do you sign on the dotted line to buy a car unseen? Why would you sign with a company without first looking at the risks involved?

Market value for services given him........ would be a start.

 

What do you think is fair as far as market value less what he owes ?
Now what do you think is fair for a new 3 or 4 month old driver that doesn't owe for his training??

 

Are you leasing or purchasing the truck? If purchasing go to a bank and get a bank loan that pays off the truck. Then pay off the 11 grand over 4 years with the bank, using the truck as collateral.

If leasing, well its your credit. Everyone here will have told you to avoid a lease. Tho we comonly know it as a Flease (Fleet Lease). Unfortunately they had you sign papers to get it.
