I have no doubt BEV are the future. The driverless technology is being developed at a fairly rapid pace but the infrastructure for the tech will lag. I can see TL freight being marshalled east of LA or the bay area and sent along 10 or 80 first.
Nah, an emp would be quite localized, even a carrington event would be pretty bad but we wouldnt be back to the dark ages, more back to victorian times and then pretty rapidly (50 years) be bounced back, it would suck, and yes, there would be significant rapid population contraction (thats the polite way of saying billions dead) but those would be manageable compared to an actual all out nuclear launch, yellowstone caldera or dinosaur finishing asteroid. Now, give it 30-50 more years and a carrington event could actually be back to the caves for people, but right now theres still plenty of places with no or minimal electricity and enough widespread mechanical know-how to bounce back
