Whoa... NET over $1000 ... that's AFTER taxes. Sure you didn't mean Gross (before tax deductions)?

    Tankineer,

    Thanks for your postings!

Saw where you apparently are going with Schneider. Which division? What led to your decision? I've been encouraged by several to go with the offer I've received from Epes out of Greensboro, NC. But I have to return a call to Mitchell Wallace , recruiter with Schneider. Didn't know if I should consider them as well.

    Thanks!

    Your welcome!

Went with Schneider for the following reasons. I am doing OTR team driving.

    1) Benifits
    2) Available team driving position
    3) Support of the Military and thier Apprentiship Program
    4) Support of home time (expect to be out 3-4 weeks, home 4-5 days. Partner is still in the Guard)
    5) Gave me credit for Military experience (considerable hike in starting cents per mile)

This fit my needs. Go with what company fits your needs.

    Good luck

I meant net. I use every bit of my 14 most days. With the exception of a quick shower I don't stop once I start my clock. I eat on the way from one stop to the next. .40/mile, $50/trailer and $20/stop. I also train, but even between students I rarely gross less than 1200, which gives me around 850-900 net. I've grossed as much as 1600 with no training pay, but that was before e-logs. :biggrin_25520:

As a newbie, one of the main reasons I search this site and others (I haven't found them yet but this can't be the only one) is to find out, among many things, 1. what to expect and 2. what companies will hire me right out of school, etc. What I find on sites like this is that no matter what the subject is, music, motorcycles, cars, etc. EVERYONE has their own opinion about what the best or worst is. And that is great, it's what makes us unique. If we're talking chinese food or virtuoso guitarists... it all comes down to your preference and your likes. (Eric Johson happens to be my favorite guitarists... but I digress :) )

I've seen so many say.. "It's all about the driver" and I think that speaks volumes, but as newbie's we also must set our expectations accordingly. As for me, I'm no spring chicken, and this ain't my first rodeo but I STILL know that I'll have to put in my time and pay my dues. The more senior guys will get the most miles, I'm sure of that. Every FM or dispatcher is not going to be my best buddy.. I'm sure over the course of my career (if I even get it off the ground) I'll have many that drive me crazy. There will be good days and bad...

As for me, my expectations aren't real high, as long as I am treated decently.. I hope that in my first year I will get enough miles to have a good solid education for the trucking industry and maybe pick up some tips and tricks along the way. What to do, what NOT to do. My biggest goal is to make it through the first year with a good safety record. Drive safe and get home in one piece.

So I guess my questions would be these...

    1. What companies take the time to properly work with a newbie? I mean, I don't want a company that just throws me the keys and says "hit the road". I want to know that they think I'm ready.
    2. What companies have good safe equipment?
    3. What companies put adequate money into providing me tools to do my job well. (for instance I've seen some companies that have side camera's for safety) As a newbie, it's important to me to know that I have the tools to drive safely and effeciently.

Lastly, I'm brand new so I don't even know what I want from a company, so how can I judge what a "great" company is versus what a "bad" company is. Granted, if enough people say negative things about a company.. the law of average says they're probably not a good company, no matter what. But let's take it back to my music analogy.. If I had grown up with country and western only, how would I know if someone told me Jimi Hendrix was a "great" guitarists...? I may find that I don't even like rock and roll (I do by the way.. I love all music).

So how do the companies previously mentioned take care of their new drivers?

    Nightwind8830 and Nottoway Thank this.

I just applied with Watkins. I live about 90 miles away from their terminal so we will see if they are up for the Company training program with me. Thanks for the info.
