I'm not a choice IC, (don't even pull a van and wouldn't be caught dead doing so) but for me, I'd factor in 15% for deadhead/unproductive mileage in any scenario.

Are you pulling flatbed/reefer somewhere else?

The deadhead could be factored. Those crazy trailer searches would be harder to guestimate, I would imagine.

Deadhead or unproductive, in the grand scheme it's all the same.

The handiest number I crunch is my average rate after the company's percentage and my fuel bill. I consider that my Gross Profit. I'm not sure if that is the correct use of term but armed with that number I can look at any rate and know what my net will be on any load.

All other costs are "fixed variables" and only change with productivity.

you're not too far off......well within reason.
When I did it, I figured:
    10,000 miles / month
    $3.85 fuel
    6.5 mpg
    $1.50 / mile

and I wasn't too far off either. You're in the ballpark, ($1.80 is a little optimistic, though),rock on!!

Those are about the same numbers I use on the Bulk side of the house.

The biggest thing you can do is eliminate as many of the non-fixed expenses as possible. The more steady the expense is, the easier it will be to manage your money.

I like those numbers! Of course everybody would like to have more of the pie, but it still beats company pay and DBL's...run where you want, home when you want etc. Still amazing to me how fuel costs are so close to net pay. YUCK

$1.80 is possible but tough. Here in the NE I am averaging close to that but not quite. Probably closer to $1.70, I'd have to crunch the numbers and get back to you. I'm at home and the truck is way out in the driveway.......
