So it costs about $1.03 per mile to run your own truck? And if a load pays $1.50 a mile you are pocketing 47 cents a mile?

Not sure what you mean by "general funds", but I put 25% of every paycheck into my savings account that will be set aside for taxes, etc. And thanks, just remember there's a lot of preconceived notions out there as well, lol.

Yep, right around $1.03 per mile. That of course will vary slightly (or greatly) depending on fuel mileage, and other factors such as total miles run per week, etc., since the weekly truck payments are factored into that cost, and they get deducted weekly regardless if I am rolling or not. So yes, if I run a $1.50 per mile load, I pocket 47 cents of that per mile, 25 percent of which I put into savings and will be used for paying taxes etc.

Last week I brought home $1,328, so I put $332 of that into savings.

However, in fairness and for the sake of those reading this thinking about "jumping on", remember this:

The payments NEVER stop. Soooooo, you want to take a few days off?? Fine, still gotta make the payment.
Soooooo, truck broke down for a couple of days. Man that's tough......still gotta make the payment.
Soooooo, holiday or personal day (anniversary, birthday, whatever) coming up? Awesome!!! Still gotta make the payment.

I say all of that for information purposes only. I know DF wants to provide all the legit good news / bad news to everyone who's reading; as do I. I'm not complaining a bit; not one single bit. Simply trying to keep everybody on the same page. I broke down twice in 2 weeks and went home once for 2 days. So I ran (or was on the road) for 12 of the last 14 days. May pay last week.....$0. My pay next Friday.....around $500.

It's tough when that kind of stuff happens, but it does happen.

Yep, what Dipschitt said is very very true. His experience is very similar to what mine was when I took some time off around Christmas... you think "oh a few days here and there won't hurt" and then you look at just how much it is costing you and now you're having to dig yourself out of a hole. I ended up spending over $1800 out of my bank account making truck payments for the time that I was off, so I wouldn't be WAY in the red trying to catch back up for the new year.

Think about having to take off time like that unexpectedly for family issues or a major breakdown on the truck. Not so easy now, is it?

The reason I'm able to make this work doing like I do (especially running cheaper freight that doesn't go into the Northeast) is because of the situation that I'm in... no debt, very little in terms of other payments to make, extremely cheap rent when I want to go home, and no family to support or other situation that would require me to be home more often.

On another note, passed my quarterly inspection. Literally took 10 minutes... guy took a quick look at my truck, opened the hood and saw how clean I keep everything... looks to me and asks if I just got the truck, I told him no I've had it for about 25,000 miles so far, he says "man this thing is TIGHT", writes ALL GOOD in giant letters on the inspection paper and I'm good to go.

Sitting at in line at the Blue Beacon in Carlisle at the moment... then its back to the OC and time to start planning the next loads.

Also have to agree.. My situation is little different. Wife at home and rent to pay but don't have any debt (except for the big truck). However, paying an extra $100 a week (by talking to your rep and having SFI automatically deduct it) on my truck note helps a lot. When things happen or need time off I usually will have enough to take a bi-week on the truck and maintenance payment by calling my rep and asking for it. Makes it a lot easier to manage. Plus I save an extra $250per week in my personal account for taxes minor truck expenses etc..

Hey DFO, in your calculations are you including the fuel surcharge or leaving it out?

DFO,if i may make suggestion,it would be to put all info about your bussiness on spreadsheets.
They can calculated just as good as a calculator and it is easier to analyse/work with the numbers.

For those that don't have a Windows Office on their laptop, there is Open Office.

    DFo,great thread btw.:yes2557:

I'm including the FSC, wish I wasn't LOL but yeah its included in all the numbers.

Good idea, I will make some spreadsheets at some point, might make things a little easier to analyze.
