Is the school accredited as an institution of higher learning? Any school that qualifies for outside financing, scholarships and grants has to be accredited.

What is accreditation you ask? :)

    http://www2.ed.gov/admins/finaid/accred/index.html
Look on their website or other literature who they are accredited by. Then google to find a contact with them and file a complaint.

Once you get 7 posts you can PM me the schools name if you don't want to disclose it publicly. You ought to so others don't fall in the same trap. But I'll try to help you find the right contact.

As strict as CA is about many things they are pretty slack when it comes to trucking instructors. They don't have no set requirements other than a clean CDL and to take a state instructor exam which isn't much different from a driving exam. You'd think they would police these schools but they don't.

These schools have one objective and that's for you to get your CDL in your hand. The real training starts with a company trainer when you get hired on.

Unless this school just started and they are bad as you say there should be other posts here by other victims.

Part of the existence of these forums are to share info on the good and the bad.

I did find one link if they are abusing their federal funding the Office of the Inspector General for the Dept of Education will crack down.

It might be a long shot but if not they could point you in the right direction if you have a valid complaint.

One reason why the VA should not be handing out money to schools that are like this, they don't really teach anything. Legal action? Seriously I would think about contacting the people who gave them their permits to teach and file a complaint but the thing is documenting the problems is key.

As for you getting your money out of this by getting a CDL, failure is relative to the person, not a given. No one is guaranteed getting a CDL when they go to school and I found out that too many who are are not equipped to drive in the first place have no way to pass the road test even if they attended school. I feel that the person is part of the process, it is their responsibility to learn and ask, if no one is there to ask questions to, then there are a lot of ways of learning, even backing up.

Pre-trips are important, too many things are missed by the lack of them and it is a good habit to get into.

I must be lucky like you...I didn't have to do a PTI either on my test. My state didn't require it at the time hehe. All I had to do was a brake test. Yep passed it, truck didn't though tractor protection valve wasn't working properly. Oh well I still passed and got this wonderful thing called a CDL and also gave away my rights.:biggrin_2554:

Contact the Police and have them arrested. Based on your testimony alone, when it goes to trail, all those "criminal" Instructors should get 20 years in the Hoosegow. No, make that 30 years.

I think the earlier comments that the "real training" begins after you get your CDL and are trained by the company that hires you. I have a unique perspective on this because I didn't attend a school to regain my CDL (after a 30 year hiatus from trucking). My path to regaining my CDL and start trucking was to independently take the written exam and pay for my own medical exam to get my med card. With permit in hand I got on my O/O brothers truck to retrain. Then using his truck we went repeatedly to the DMV in San Bernardino, CA to take the driving test. I say repeatedly because I indeed failed the test three times and because we were on the road every week and couldn't predict when we would be in town it was impossible to schedule an appointment 3-6 weeks in advance. It took me two times to pass the pretrip because they were looking for specific terms like "inflation" when I was saying "air pressure" (that's 18 points deducted right there! :D), then when I went back the third time I passed the pretrip.... but the skills test is in a dirt lot and that morning a 50 mph wind was blowing so hard it was literally blowing over the weighted cones and at times I couldn't see more than 30 feet... so I missed the angle dock because I was aiming at the wrong cone!

Meanwhile there were several times we went on a standby basis (no appointment) and waited but never got the opportunity to take the test. In all we went about 12 times...

.... and what I saw of all those driving school students taking the skills test was entertaining to say the least. We got to know some of the driving school instructors that were in charge of getting their students through the DMV testing process. They all confirmed that they don't really teach the students to drive until after they get their CDL. Then they will give the students 40 hours on the road before graduation. That was the better schools.

The 4th time I actually was able to take the test it was a beautiful calm day and I passed everything with flying colors and was officially hired the next day by my brother's company. Three months later we decided to part ways, since he was earning less money driving team than when he was solo (can't double the miles when driving team). I then hired on with Swift and they required I take the 240 hours behind the wheel training since I hadn't gone through a school. Now I'm four months into solo.

OP.... hang in there, get the CDL, and get your real training from the company that hires you. Insist on a good company trainer with at least 3-5 years experience, and don't put up with abusive or unsafe behavior during training (yep, a lot of trainer horror stories out there). Be sure that by the time you finish training that you know everything step by step regarding how to handle paperwork, log into the EOBR, doing pretrip plans, etc. Good luck with the process and stay patient.

Most of what you will learn will come from trial and error otr....dont sweat the school issue... Study and get your cdl and then find a trucking company to advance your training and get you on the road.....hurry up we need you out here!!!!

This story sounds a lot like my experience at Nettts in Bridgeport CT, I can feel your pain.. Then I dropped out of Netts cause the teachers sucked and always yelled at me when I messed up also school was a joke. I recently started another school and it's 100% more professional and I might actually get a cdl for my moneys worth..

You should contact OOIDA and let them know what happened. And you should join the OOIDA also. All of the members would love nothing more than to regulate these schools and make them provide actual training. They can't do it without a million or more members and right now they only have about 150K members. If only everyone would join and take control of this industry, we could finally stop all of this madness.
