Well as one who runs all the bands in the truck i woiuld suggest a 706 or something like that for the HF and a D710 or D710A for the 2M/440 side that way you can join us on APRS there are many of us running APRS out here and we run 14.302.5 on 20 meters when the band is right which it hasn't been here lately but we do our best. And as far as antenna its your choice either and hand full of Ham Sticks or a screwdriver of some sort. Depends on the budget you have so there you have the short and long of it. Join us and have a good time trucking while still enjoying your hobbie. Good luck and let me know if you need any help will be glad to answer any questions you have if i can.darthanubis Thanks this.

Thanks kd5, the fellow I meant has been a great help, and I have been listening to some of the locals on 10 meters. It definetly seems alot more, for lack of a better word, civilized up there. I started in CB and still have alot of good friends that won't make the transition, but I think I have to try it out. Seems like I'll probably enjoy it.

I'd definitely also recommend going with the D710 or a used D700 for APRS especially in the Northwest.
AKA KC8RWD -
Since you obviously need some clarification... I was referring to the previous posts that you have made, and before you start attempting to argue with me why don't you go back and review. Thanks. -
APRS on 20? neet ....
I'm seting up on PSK-31 using a signalink USB can you do 20 meter APRS with one of them ????? -
I think you miss understood me we do voice on 20 and APRS on 2 meters. You can do APRS on 30 Meters thought if you want. I used to do that when i had an extra radio around. But you will need a HF TNC for that. I am not much into the PSK thing. Hope that helps you out.

What's the ICOM version of a VHF/UHF similar to the Kenwook (I assume) 710?
-
There really isn't an ICOM similar, as they don't do APRS, but have gone into the D-Star, which is in limited areas, but growing in popularity. Yaesu has a model, FTM-350 in the works that is similar and does APRS. Don't know when it will be approved/released or price.

I remember packet from years ago. With all the email and such, it's surprising that packet is used that much today. I was thinking a dual bander would be fun. OR at least 2 meters as they are pretty cheap now ($100 or so plus antenna) I know SSB would be fun too, but maybe later.
Thoughts...
