I guess I am one of the lucky ones, I never ran into a problem on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. I kinda hate it now days because of the Mack quad axle I am driving........the transition joints beat the crap out of me. I got shut down on the north side once for 13 hours for wind conditions, but they have a huge parking lot to handle it.

That is funny.......I have been to Trinidad a few times, and it isn't much better. The trade winds make it a bit more comfortable, but if they slack........................it is humid as hell.

Never heard of company drivers being able to pick and choose when and where they run. That's pretty much what you're asking for.
Being sent into freaking ice storms and blizzards as a company driver because "the load had to be covered" really made me dislike being a company driver during winter.
The real only way to have that much control is to become an O/O and where you pick your own loads.
I leased a truck and now work with Schneider's load board and am in total control of how, when and where I run.
No more taking loads into ice storms for me, when I see bad weather I book to go AWAY from that crap.

I live in New England as well. So I feel your pain(s).

if I could, i'd move to the south west. like Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and be done with it up here. I too own a home, and am tied to it. If you are not as tied to yours, then frankly, move south, and run that region.

If it gets that bad now..................it's shut down. We lost 3 brethren drivers on the bridge back in the 90's.

One thing I like about my company is that they let the driver decide whether or not to shutdown due to weather condition... they never force us to drive if we say it's unsafe...

Decent companies and dispatchers will always do that. I used to get calls from my fleet manager asking if I thought that we would might need a reset time on the load. They left it up to me.

well really nobody can "force" you to drive.
If it's not safe just shut it down.
However nobody is making money at that point. I like to just avoid terrible winter storms cause beyond it being unsafe.. I don't make money sitting.
