Thanks good post. I firmly believe he should stick to his first commitment. If it was a wrong decision, them learn from it. Consider it a life lesson. He is only 26 so he will be fine.
I won't disagree with @bamamac for trying to raise his grandson up right. I just wish the same principles of integrity would apply to trucking companies, especially trucking companies who take in new drivers.
As suggested earlier. Tell your grandson to talk with current employer about second job offer. What is different if he leaves for better job now or in a year. Grandson loses a year of higher pay. Unless grandson said he would work for xxx many days, he has no obligation to stay. Current company has not much invested in training,. Isn't it expected employees leave sooner or later, BECAUSE there is always a better job or a change of circumstances. Good luck
He may not have given any commitment at all. Just because they gave him a physical doesn't mean he is hired and obligated to anything just yet. These mega company's can give him a bus ticket right back home if they find something they don't like.
You folks are reading something into a post that doesn't exist. Who said anything about a commitment? This guy is talking about a physical and a drug screen so that reads to me as a mega. What is that obligation to a mega-crap company? They most likely fired a half a dozen guys last week for picking their nose on the in cab camera. Another dozen left because they got cheated on their paycheck for the 100th time when it is only their 28th paycheck. Still others just got tired of sitting in the terminal waiting for freight and left. And this new guy has a commitment how?
Since getting back into trucking five years ago I have taken a physical and drug test for every job, one for Swift and two for decidedly non-mega companies. If there isn't a drug test and physical as part of the hiring process, then it begs the question how many other safety and compliance requirements they are skirting?
Only the drug test is required to hire a driver, I've been using my own physician for DOT physicals for the past 6 years. Schneider made me get a new physical through them, but my current employer just made a copy of my form.
The turn over rate in this industry is high for a reason. There is no loyalty anymore. But the trucking companies are the ones who fired first. They have created DAC to sc rew over employees. All bets are off after that. And as to who came first the Chicken or the Egg, it was neither. The Rooster Came first but he promises to do better next time.
Noted. The company I am leased on with now required more than the basic physical, so I had to use their approved physician. Something about being able to lift heavy objects and demonstrate the ability to do flatbed securement without having a heart attack.
