Price gouging is a real phenomenon. I had first hand memories as a kid needed to stay in line for long winter hours in 1980 - 81 to buy a loaf of bread or a brick of salted butter. Or if you had enough greens from your aunt in Chicago you could go to that old ##### around the corner and buy it there, no wait. Many times, I fancied Roskolnikov split her head in two with an axe.

And the term is present in every business book. Probably more real and concrete than the nowadays forbidden verb "to jew" which, if taken at a face value I find less malign, anyways.

I don't buy #### at the stores to sell to my neighbors. That's not my business. My business is trucking which as most of us know means getting by on thin margins. When storms or other crisis happen and demand spikes prices going up is a normal market function that ensures there is a supply.

Gouging is a term invented by communists. If Wal Mart would raise the price of toilet paper from the typical $10 a bulk package to $50 a package overnight you would see store shelves stocked full of toilet paper and there would be plenty for everyone. Once wal mart realized no-one was buying it the price would come back down.

The sleeping in the King Size bad is not good if you can't sleep at all...bothered by qualms of knowing what a price gouging, greedy creature you are.

Price gouging is a phenomenon that was assigned a term. Not sure who but the term was needed nonetheless.
Every one would hate price gouging if first hand experienced to the point of affecting their livelihoods for more than a few weeks. I wonder how many of you would appreciate WM selling you can of dog food for humans 10 dol a piece.

 

I'd rather have the chance to pay $10 for that dog food than to see an empty shelf. That is not price gouging.

 

What you're missing is that higher prices serve to temper the panic and make people think rationally about a situation. So instead of buying up 50 cases of toilet paper they only buy what they need.

 

People aren't going to ever see or feel a temporary spike in truck rates. If you think brokers are taking one for team USA when they give a spot bid to a toilet paper or hand sanitizer plant I got a bridge I'd like to sell you. If it makes you feel better charge $7 a mile for a load of toilet paper and donate $5 of that to St Judes or some other charity.
