It's been a long time since I looked, does anyone know what someone like McKinney Trailer rents a 53' dry van for? I thought it was like a grand a month and 0.03 per mile maintenance fee on top?

A nickel sounds reasonable to me and over 5 years depending on luck,it could be a little high. You mentioned insurance earlier,I just looked and comp and collision is only $1600 a year for me.

I even like the idea of trading every 3 years.
For the first 3 years you don't do any repairs or maintenance, even tires last that many miles if you don't haul heavy.
So buy for $32k, sell for $20k, $12k for 3 years is $4k per year,. $333 per month.
If after 3 years you get 8 new good tires, brakes, shocks, alignment, whatever else, let's say for $6600, that is gonna cost you $183 for another 3 years.
Then add depreciation, more repairs, worse resale value and it looks like keeping a trailer for 3 years costs you the same as keeping it for 6 years, but you always ride with a new equipment, with a less chance for the downtime

I wasn’t meaning to piss you off Dale. I figured that on a percentage deal that the truck owner is paying for the trailers insurance anyway.

Trailer insurance isn’t very expensive regardless but I’ll leave it be. Have a good evening.

. Not pissed at all. I just disagree with you on the numbers. I think you’re overly optimistic with low TCO numbers but what I think does not matter in the long run.

Yeah, your right. They do it by the 8th of an inch. Or if there is a blowout it’s on you. Unless you pick it up and immediately have problems of course. Buying is best but renting is 2nd. I would never lease a trailer as you might as well but. Last for me would be paying 6% to rent a trailer. Unless it was a reefer.

You have a REAL good point. My first new trailers I ever bought I sold about 4 months ago after a few months over 5 yrs. my second round I bought will be 3 in March. I have done jack #### to them since new except a random tire repair. Normal.

The 5 yr units I paid 30k for and sold for 19k but that was also on the quick. I needed to move them. Those were 2016’s that I got in 2015. These 2019’s that I got in 2018 were 32,000 and I’m going to take your advice and research their value. It wouldn’t surprise me if it wasn’t 27k right now with the market hot. The 2021’s I replaced the 2016’s with were 33,900. So prices do continually rise.

Doing a full set of tires, shocks, drums, alignment would be nice to skip. That’s why I pushed those 2016’s out the door is because I didn’t want to do round two.

I went back and dug up a receipt from McKinney Trailer Rental on a 53' dry van I rented from them. This was in April in 2016.

    4 week billing cycle
    8490 Miles
    $795.50 Total paid
    9.4 cents per mile

I would imagine that the cost has increased in the last 4 years, especially with the limited supply of available trailers on the market these days.
