“Dino soar, I will tell you one thing though. I'm really happy with my own authority because I don't have anyone telling me this is where you're going and this is what it pays.” How do you find loads? Do you have relationships with various companies/individuals that need freight moved or do you use load boards? What is the process for an o/o with their own authority for finding work?
When you have your own authority you use load boards. Now you can also try to secure some direct Freight if you'd like to but for someone like me I really like the flexibility of not having a customer that has to have this load go out at this time every so many days or whatever it is. You call the broker and you negotiate and you take your load.
I'm leased and use loadboards. Been doing that for 10 years. Everyone says it's an awful way to do it. Still hanging in there somehow. To be honest if I get my own authority I see loadboards as my sole and only source of freight. Been working for me...
What do you mean when you say you are leased and use loadnoards? Are you on a lease purchase program?
Lease purchase program? I'm insulted. I bought my first used truck 11 years ago and paid cash for it outright. Bought a used and then a brand new trailer and paid cash outright for both of those too. Down to just my truck now. It aint nothing special and there's plenty of guys on here who have done a lot more but I would never try to run a truck I didn't own. You have a lot to learn asking such questions. It's probably best for you to just drive for someone a while longer and soak all the info in.
I thought loadboards is for independent owner-ops who do not drive for just one trucking company. I thought load boards is for independent owner ops who will drive for any shipper. Are you an independent owner op who "leases" his truck for one load for each shipper who hires him?
He owns his truck and trailer, is leased to a motor carrier using their authority, and he finds his own loads on a load board. Things aren’t as cut and dry as you try and make them. For example, I own my truck and trailer, technically I’m leased to carrier (I pay my friend a small fee to use his authority), and I run dedicated for a brokerage/logistics company.
He means leased to a carrier, as in the carrier is essentially leasing the owner operators equipment and services.
