What about an "in transit" permit, or is that only available from a dealer in Georgia?

 

You could get a county tag with proof of insurance, 2290 paid You would have to register the truck and you would need a DOT number.

 

That is illegal and his "buddy" would be legally liable if he was in an accident. The only way that's legal is if he leases to his buddy, then gets on his buddy's insurance and go thru all the other legalities.

 

Well it is GA, the only reason GA has the laws they do is because of all the "illegal" stuff that truckers did and still do so I'm sure he doesn't care to drive down the road without plates.

 

In Alabama you can get a county tag for 55k lbs registered in your personal name, no 2290 needed, no IFTA, it was around $500 last time I got one and you could drive anywhere NOT FOR HIRE. I would think Georgia would be similar.

 

Things have changed in AL. I live in AL and you will have to have a paid 2290 and a DOT number even for a county tag.
He can do the same thing in GA which is what I mentioned to him. I believe that most if not ALL states require a DOT number even if you're not for hire

 

Dot# yes, 2290 only if you register for 55k and up. Dot # is easy and free to get.

 

In my state, (ID), no need for a DOT #, no 2290 if under 5k miles per year. Matter of fact, nothing needed on the door. I just moved a truck off the DOT listing onto the farm fleet, took everything off the door, paid the county $200, the insurance company $500, and I’m good for the year, as long as I stay in state.

 

When you’re calling and getting information don’t say anything about it being a commercial vehicle, because currently it’s not. Say you bought a truck for personal use and you need to know what is required in order to tag it as a farm truck.
