My mother is only 5' 3" and she drove for years. For what it's worth, a year is not that long gives yourself some time to do so diligent research on a decent company to start with. Get your feet wet start with finding some place that will hire you spotting trailers giving you some backing skills early. That's what I did at 18 yrs. Old many moons ago with a old cabover sleeper truck. Then take the time to find a smaller company that will hire you. Stay away from the mega companies if at all possible. Take the one year and really research, research, research. Visit with some smaller companies see if you can do ride alongs or be hired on as a driver helper with some of the foodservice companies in your area. Find out all you can about this crazy industry to be sure it's what you really want to do. Just my opinion
Want to do driving but I'm 20 and in Minneapolis

Go get your license. Never mind your 5.6 Ive seen dwarfs at 4 feet climbing around flatbeds binding steel coil and chain.
You will have your fill of trucking given enough years of your life in the future. Go to it. MN has many things up there. Should be pretty gravy for you. Have at it.quatto Thanks this. -
Getting the vibe that driver helper might be a good idea for the time being?
Saw spotting trailers, will look into that. Ill also see what's out here for me.
Also I would just go into my dream career field if it wasn't to be a veterinarian. That will takes years to complete and money I simply don't have or earn. Good university's be costing 40k a year. I barely make 10k. So I got time and, thankfully, a very wide variety of interests. -
You will have plenty of time to be a vet. Or something else entirely.
We did the college thing ten years ago, wife and I. 46K in debt, paid off by getting rid of the house. Her 4 year was worthless because 10,000 students have the same thing. It's crap. My own two year computer science work ground to a halt when I realized I wont be a web monkey kowtowing to those in charge of data centers. Or watching Indian H1B visa workers take my future work in a few months as actually happened in Arkansas. I cut losses and got out. I build big computers and some of those are still going after 10 years so I did a good job. That's enough for me.bottomdumpin Thanks this. -
Which is why I'm learning a trade in the meantime. To make enough to actually go into animal care. -

Talk to local animal shelters and farmer's cooperatives. There's actually plenty of money available for young people who want to go into veterinary practice, especially large animal (horses, cattle, and such). You may be working for just over free for a while but you'll be working in a greatly valued and much needed field.
Seriously, there is a shortage of qualified veterinarians in many agricultural parts of this country. Start doing your research! -
Unfortunately this also means I can't even remotely afford to work for free, even if it's fun and something I genuinely and highly enjoy doing. So if I could be using that volunteer time to get paid somewhere else, I'll go and get my money.
However I am thankful for the suggestion with the Canadian school cause American universities are going to drain me of both money and soul.
Which is why I'm considering doing this until I get to a point where I can go back to school. I swear every other job on hiring websites and engines are for CDL-A or B drivers, especially out here. It's in demand and I want to help fill it. Especially since I'm too young for Uber or Lyft.brsims Thanks this. -
