Its probably high because of those injury lawyers. Just watch 30 min of TV in North Carolina and you will see maybe 6 commercials for accident attornies. Workers comp claims must be paying hugely for them to have so many TV commercials and Billboards.

They may be part of the problem as well. We are a mostly agricultural state with alot of social programs. It seems evrey which way they can tax us they will do it.
    But I digress....lol

In NC the rate percentage is based on 2/3 of the weekly wages, not on 100% of wages.

You can inquire as to the details but NC does allow you to self insure. Be very careful. There are good ways of doing this and some very bad ways.

Thanks, that sounds more reasonable. I need to find out the detail so I can show it to Fedex. They are the ones telling me these crazy numbers.

I would call the NC WC commission and quiz them.

There is a difference between workmans comp insurance and occupational accident insurance. Workmans comp is a state run program while occupational accident insurance is carried by insurance companies. With workmans comp the state sets the benefits and medical coverage for on the job injuries, while in occupational accident what benefits and medical paid are set by the limits the carrier choses to pay for. In most states a OO/independent contractor is allowed to have the cheaper option of occupational accident coverage but not in North Carolina. I remember when I first became an O/O with a company in Indiana, I was surprised with the difference I had to pay compared to someone from NC.
I think the best advice I have seen here Was from @dibstr. Call them and ask.
There are some FAQs about this on: NC Industrial Commission Frequently Asked Questions

You're trying to end run the requirements of FedEx.

Two choices, one is you pay for it after you move

    Or

You rent a place in where ever it is cheap, with your mailing address there and buy a place in NC and 'visit' there.

Call one of the many fed-ex contractors that run out of kernersville and quiz them.

They post on Craigslist a lot. The ones I've talked to are pretty cool and probably will be helpful
