I would love to take a couple trips with a driver to be honest but unfortunately time does not allow considering I am only an intern and I am in school and I have another job. If I do end up working full time for a transportation company I do plan to ask if I can go on a ride along to understand the driver perspective better. Would having Human Resources on a ride along make a driver feel uneasy or would they appreciate that HR has taken an interest in understanding it better?

The people in the office understand what drivers do and put up with (for the most part). They know because drivers continually $itch and gripe about their position to them on the phone and qualcomm. But the point is in many cases there is not much the office can do. They can't make freight appear anywhere, going just where you want to go, the way you want to get it there. What good is "understanding" going to do? You think they are all of the sudden going to be your best friend? You think things are going to be much much better? You think their "understanding" is going to change the economy and other trucking business realities, and their freight base is going to double overnight and they are going to be able to take perfect care of you and every other driver on their board?

Bottom line for me is a company who realizes that those miles we turn in a truck is what pays for the entire company. Not the jobs in management, office, saftey, or any other position. I know what I need to do each and everyday I turn the key on that truck. We are "Professionals" after all. This is why I believe alot of positions in a trucking company should be filled by veteran drivers who have a good understanding of what it takes to get the job done safely and efficiently. There are things that school will never teach you, only real world experience will. Thats my two cents.

    MAGNUMHR Thanks this.
