Let me miss a dose of my seizure meds and I have been known to take a trip so short I don't even leave the house!

Mine weren’t heavy. Just your average 10-11ft machinery loads. I would sit in Houston for weeks on end doing basically local loads. 3-4 short hops, very few miles, had a motel room for $200/week.

Had a similar gig for a while in the Seattle area. Was a company schmuck on mileage, but got paid $250 every time I crossed the border. Heck, I would try to stay in the area and run Genies into Vancouver.

Was able to do similar stuff by staying between CharlestonSC and JacksonvilleFL. That’s Charleston, Savannah, Brunswick and J’ville.

Most loads pay about the same, be it 1 mile or 600 miles. If you run a load board, a broker will scoop all the money off of a load and put it on a load board for a couple hundred bucks, BUT that load pays a day rate. These mega carriers aren’t sending trucks in anywhere for $250-300 for a short hop. That load pays a grand. They will pay a mileage driver on a sliding pay scale or a local driver $100/day and keep $900 for themselves. A percentage company schmuck will make $250-$300/load. Open deck, short hop, at the ports, plan on working 5 hours a day. Not a bad way at all to make money.
