What are the safest and most dangerous truckstops??

K&H Truck Plaza, Exit 283 on I57 in Gilman, IL.

Actual address is 1043 S. Crescent Street, it's a block east of I57.

Clean showers & restrooms, good restaurant, friendly folks work there, no trouble with lot lizards or other riff-raff in the parking lot.

 

any one ever thought about using a map to list all the good and bad stops hate to read 35 pages just to get the info

I just put a little + sign in my t-stop book if its really good and is a place I want to remember, on the fliip side to that I use a - sign for the bad ones..

 

I still recall the Pilot down at the Wildwood, FL exit off of I-75. This was 20 or so years back but there was one not terribly old (early 30s) who worked there on 2nd shift who would always brag about how she could 'service' the entire parking lot before the sun came up. She reportedly didn't allow 'competition' to come on the property and she looked like a 'dominatrix' who escaped from a local sex club/ discoteque. I'll never forget her wild, bottle blond hair.

I remember another fuel stop from the same era just above Orlando off of I-4 that seemed to employ college age women; most looked pretty darned good. They apparently financed their schooling with a bit of 'sidework' in the adjacent parking areas and a nearby rest area.

I hardly go to Florida anymore except to visit relatives.

The only truckstop I've largely avoided over the last 10 years or so is the Wilco at the St. Matthews, SC exit 138 off of I-26. As a life long Southerner, I found it a bit disconcerting to find the place always full of people from New York, New Jersey, etc. walking around with a chip on their shoulder looking for trouble. Provocations were the order of the day. The only reason I could figure out these guys picked this place is because only blacks worked there, the management didn't give a darn and local law enforcement could care less.

As a future driver I can't say too much good/bad about truck stops. I would hate to take up a spot for one of ya as a four-wheeler. Anyway I have stayed over-night in the front seat of my car a few times on the outside of a row between the trucks and the "grass" that always boarders the lot. Left plenty of room for trucks to roll by. I for one, in the future would probably stay away from stops outside of fueling and "gassing up" and instead try to find another option. Wal-Mart anyone?

On a side note, I would have to say the place I felt was always decent to visit even as a four-wheeler would be the Plane View Truck Stop, just south of Oshkosh Wisconsin where highway 26 meets US 41, it's on the west side of the street. There's even an Adult Store across the road that I've seen some drivers stop and use as maybe an Overflow lot? Anyone have other opinions about this one or "The Stretch" down around County Road OO (Double-OH) near Fon Du Lac?

 

When I first started driving Wally World was very truck friendly, now because of a select few that chose to leave their garbage behind, not so much..

Yes he did just say that, I just got finished reading it. I'll even bet he goes to church every Sunday and thanks the good Lord for everything he's got and to tell everyone in the congregation how he accepts his fellow man. Tell me I'm wrong so I can go on to a not so hypocritical blog.

 

I was screwing around and happened to look at some of the early pages in this thread.
I notice that several of the truck stops listed early on are no longer open.
I guess if enough drivers decide it is a bad place to go, eventually the place has to shut down.
One or two that have been noted in here have gotten a little better over the years. Including the TA in Jessup MD, still not a good truck stop, but better and safer than it use to be.
