Drove an 18 foot KB5 IH from the Sale Barn up to the courthouse in West Point., MS. HP man came out and looked at my birth certificate. Got in and told
me to drive back down to the highway. Drove south to about where the Walmart is south of town and he said turn down here and go back. Drove back, went in courthouse and got my license. Got the Chauffer's License cap badge in the mail 2 weeks later. A few days after my Sept 3, 1950 birthday. Licenses were paper forms then. My initial # was 62710. When computers came in they added 900 in front of the number to make it work. So if you see a MS license starting with 900, it is an old one. Also, in say about 56-57, AR license was on orange paper. Bought me a set of them at the W. Memphis scales. Show you present active license, tell the scale man you are moving to Rt. 2, Searcy, AR, and need to know what you must do. He would be most accommodating and did not take the MS one I had.
On the skills, shifting. Only had to restrain myself from slappin the s out of a fellow driver; when he riding along, would pop off the: Rubber Gears Next Year, or Grind Me a Pound or Two of That while you are at it. Funny, in a year or more on team, we never commented on the partners gears. We were a team

That’s funny! Reminds Me of my Dad saying He could probably open up a Drs. Office, hang a fake Diploma, armed with a PDR, diagnose and treat Patients just as well as any of his Drs. Once in 1985, after a trip to the hospital with high Triglycerides, close to having a heart attack. I remember him filling out the return to work slip, signing the Drs. Name. Lol. He wasn’t the least bit worried.

I forgot all about them. Cassins is still around. Had another real big outfit back then, that did a lot of road work. They had to be Unionized, to get the bids. Chrysler Drivers, like my Dad, refused to hook up to any Outside non Union Carriers Trailers. It caused a big stink around 1976, Schneider and others started doing more Road work for Chrysler. They had to hire Central Transport to do the spotting of non Chrysler Trailers. That helped Central Transport grow. Originally formed by a Mechanic, owed money, taking possession of 7 Dodge Gasser Tractors, hiring Drivers, letting them join the Teamsters, and getting the contract with Chrysler. Today his Son Owns a majority in dozens of Publicly Traded Trucking Companies, Central is still fully privately owned, along with the whole Universal Imbtella if Companies. More Land in Michigan than anyone, except the State itself. Along with the Bridge to Canada, Hotels, everything you can imagine. I think it’s called Diversification? Imagine all from an unpaid Repair Bill in early 1960’s. It’s amazing. But there ain’t no money in Trucking! Ha ha!

Dave, your forgetting all about the California transplants. They need a place to work so they can pay bills and all that stuff.

Might bring up the prices for 'gently used ' homes in your neck of the woods

In other news my little cow town housing just rose $33,000.00 this month. This place is for the birds or Ducks.
