    And Ozzie Smith could do backflips at shortstop... but the talent mj was playing against was much worse than what LeBron is playing against... Richard Petty and cale Yarborough and Jimmy Spencer and Dale Earnhardt and name your race car driver here was racing against a lower talent of driver than what exists today... and that exists across all sports today... the average competition is much better now than in years past... and this is shown in all statistical models that you could drum up. And it's the only way to compare past era's is to compare the average talent of that era.

    Golfers play against the course, and with new equipment and juiced balls now. Tiger is old, but you don't see any of the new competition nearing his record. He has the lowest score British Open played at St. Andrews (269) and that was in 2000. The equipment advances since then are tremendous, but his 23 yr. old score still holds.

    The talent of the new drivers is no better or worse than old, just a different time and a different game. Plus, these kids are paid millions to go crash cars. In the old days it was more of a hobby, often funded without sponsors. It's apples and oranges. And in yesterday's race skill had way less to do with who won than luck.

    At least that is how it appears to me.
