However, on a working cowboys saddle there is a front cinch AND a flank girt. The flank girt is around the soft belly and cant be done up tight. Therefor it requires a billet on each side. I also use a billet for the off side of the front cinch.
The flank girts main purpose is to keep the saddle from tipping forward when a cowboy ropes a critter and dallys off to his saddle horn. Without the flank girt there is a high possibility that once that critter goes to pulling hard before turning the horse away from the load the rear of the saddle will flip up forward.
